Milan Lucic will be away from the Boston Bruins indefinitely, the organization has announced, following his involvement in an unspecified incident on Friday night.

The Bruins said they are aware of the situation and “take these matters very seriously” in a statement they made on Saturday, but they did not go into any further information regarding the event. The group promised to collaborate with Lucic’s family to offer all the help and support required.

Lucic’s early Saturday morning arrest was confirmed or denied by Boston Police. Lucic’s representative did not promptly respond to a correspondence that was given to them.

In reaction to the news, the Boston Bruins issued the following statement:

“The Boston Bruins are aware of an incident involving Milan Lucic Friday evening. Milan is taking an indefinite leave of absence from the team. The organization takes these matters very seriously and will work with the Lucic family to provide any support and assistance they may need. We will have no further comment at this time.”

Although the details of the “incident” are unknown, it was apparently bad enough for the Bruins to penalize him.

With the Boston Bruins, Los Angeles Kings, Edmonton Oilers, and Calgary Flames, among other teams, Lucic, 35, has played in over 1,300 NHL games. He returned to the organization last summer after signing a $1 million, one-year free agency deal with $500,000 in potential incentives. He won the Stanley Cup with Boston in 2011.

The Bruins stated they will have no more comments before their Saturday night home match against Montreal. Following the team’s morning skate, coach Jim Montgomery reiterated that, stating that he had not talked with Lucic and would not give any further specifics out of consideration for privacy.

Asked how to keep the situation from affecting the team, Montgomery said: “Our culture here is great, and we care about each other. With that, it’s not a normal day. But we’re professionals, and we have a game to play tonight. We have to get ready for it.”

Before Lucic is able to demonstrate it, he will need to wait a little while longer.

“First time I came to Boston, I came with one bag, a hockey bag and my sticks,” Lucic said ahead of the season. “This time around, it was 23 bags and three kids and all that. It’s a different time in my life, but I definitely think I can still bring a lot to this team and organization.”

Marchand went on to say that seeing a close friend go through this personally is tough for him. Before Lucic moved to join the Los Angeles Kings, Marchand was Lucic’s teammate for four years after entering the league in 2011.

“But obviously I’ve known ‘Looch’ for a long time, he’s a very good  friend and it’s tough to see your teammates and your friends going through stuff like this – and their family,” Marchand added.

Having played approximately 1,200 games with the Bruins, Kings, Oilers, and Flames, Lucic is currently in his 17th season in the NHL.

After leaving Boston following the 2014–15 season, the left winger—who had won the Stanley Cup with the Bruins in 2011—returned eight years later as a favorite of the supporters.
