Jimbo Fisher was sacked as Texas A&M’s head football coach on Sunday following yet another season of missing out on the College Football Playoff and performing far below expectations.

With their 51-10 triumph over Mississippi State on Saturday, the Aggies improved to 6-4 overall on the year and 4-3 against SEC opponents. Several rumours surfaced on Sunday stating that Fisher would be meeting with school administrators to inform him of their decision.

Fisher’s contract is set to be bought out by the school for more than $76 million, about three times the biggest recorded coaching contract buyout at a public institution.

The foolish decision to give one of the top paid coaches in the nation a $1.5 million pay increase to $9 million year and a four-year contract extension through 2031 was made by Texas A&M athletic director Ross Bjork. That was solely due to Fisher’s 10-1 performance throughout the 2020 COVID season.

Per the provisions of the agreement, Texas A&M will pay Fisher $7.2 a year through 2031 and will owe him $19.2 million within 60 days. These payments are not subject to offset or mitigation, and the yearly payments begin 120 days following termination.

“After very careful analysis of all the components related to Texas A&M football, I recommended to President [Mark] Welsh and then Chancellor [John] Sharp that a change in the leadership of the program was necessary in  order for Aggie football to reach our full potential and they accepted my decision,” Texas A&M athletic director Ross Bjork said in a statement. “We appreciate Coach Fisher’s time here at Texas A&M and we wish him the best in his future endeavors.”

After spending six seasons at Texas A&M, Fisher finished 45–25. In 2021, he inked a new 10-year deal with a $95 million guarantee. Part of the reason for that transaction was Fisher’s potential at the time he left for LSU.

According to sources who spoke with ESPN on Sunday morning, Fisher was given the school’s decision in a meeting. Elijah Robinson, associate head coach, will take over as the Aggies’ temporary head coach.

Just three years earlier, Fisher was already the best paid college football coach in the country. That’s when Scott Woodward, the athletic director at Texas A&M at the time, hired him for a $75 million, ten-year contract. Ross was on pace for that deal, having gone 10-1 in his third year and only missing out on the College Football Playoffs with four teams.
