Reports Tell What Stopped Giants From Trading Saquon Barkley

Despite having been traded twice in his career, Leonard Williams, the former defensive end for the Giants, thought that just one of those transactions went as planned. Has this move by the Giants had anything to do with Saquon Barkley?

Reports Tell What Stopped Giants From Trading Saquon Barkley

Williams was dealt by the Giants to the Seattle Seahawks on Monday in exchange for a fifth-round pick in 2025 and a second-round choice in the NFL Draft in 2024.

Williams informed reporters in Seattle on Wednesday that he was aware that he would be traded and that the Seahawks transaction was brought to him for approval before moving forward.

The 2-6 New York Giants hung onto other players whose contracts expire at the end of the season, such standout running back Saquon Barkley, but moved outstanding defensive tackle Leonard Williams to the Seattle Seahawks before to Tuesday’s trade deadline.

It appears that even though it would have been better for the organization’s long-term prospects, Giants general manager Joe Schoen was not allowed to fully gamble on the remainder of the season.

“Trading Williams was one thing,” Jordan Raanan of ESPN explained for a piece published Thursday. “Trading star running back Saquon Barkley would have been another, even if he’s also set to become a free agent at the end of the season. He’s the face of the franchise and moving him at the deadline would have been the equivalent of Schoen waving a white flag. That would have been a tough sell to owner John Mara, who considers the product he puts out there for the paying consumer.”

Brian Daboll, the head coach of the Giants, stated to reporters on Wednesday that Schoen “wasn’t actively shopping anyone” prior to the executive receiving an irresistible offer for Williams from Seattle.

In the meantime, Washington Post NFL insider Jason La Canfora was questioned directly by an unidentified general manager why Barkley remained with the Giants beyond the deadline.

“That’s over. He won’t be back there next year,” the general manager said about Barkley. That GM added: “Too many teams don’t prepare early enough for the deadline. They don’t understand how to sell. They wait too long to restructure, they don’t seem to have a plan, the owners aren’t clued in enough, and they don’t have their [stuff] in order. We saw a lot of that this week.”

Even, Saquon Barkley preferred to stay a member of the New York Giants, despite the summer being filled with speculation regarding his future.

When the trade deadline quickly approached, the Pro Bowl running back told reporters on Thursday that he would want to stay in New York, according to ESPN.

“Sitting here, everyone knows how I feel. Everyone knows I don’t want to get traded,” Barkley said. “I don’t think anyone in their right mind would want to get traded anywhere. It’s not an easy thing to do. You have to move. I have a family. I would love to be here.

“But like I said, it’s not in my control. My focus is to be the leader I can be for this team and get this  thing on the right track.”
