Mookie Betts Believes Trevor Bauer Deserves Another Chance

Los Angeles Dodgers player Mookie Betts expressed his hope that major-league teams will take into consideration signing former teammate Trevor Bauer this summer on Monday night when he was at the World Series to offer content for MLB’s social media platforms. According to Betts, “it’s something to think about,” the Los Angeles Times noted.

The right-hander went from winning the National League Cy Young Award to signing a three-year, $102 million deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers to being entirely out of Major League Baseball in the space of less than a year.

During the first three months of the Dodgers’ 2021 season, Betts and Bauer were teammates. In July of that season, Bauer was placed on administrative leave as MLB looked into claims made by a woman that he had attacked her twice at his house during consensual intercourse. Later, similar claims were made by other women.

Under the Joint Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault, and Child Abuse Policy, MLB banned Bauer for two full seasons, or 324 games, in April 2022. Later, after an appeal, the punishment was lowered to 194 games. When Bauer’s ban expired in January 2023, the Dodgers released him. Bauer never faced charges or an arrest. Earlier last month, he and one of the ladies resolved their legal disagreement.

“My experience with Bauer is not anything remotely close to what everyone else’s experience is,” Mookie continued. “I love him. I think he’s an awesome guy. The personal things? I have no control. I have no say. Obviously, nothing ever came from it.

“He’s an awesome pitcher. He’s a great guy, somebody who wants to take the mound every fifth day. But, at the end of the day, I don’t make the decision. That’s a decision that’s not as simple as baseball.”

Though he did end up receiving $22.5 million for what would have been the third year of his Dodgers deal when the organization dismissed him, his ban cost him $37.5 million.

In his brief tenure with the Dodgers in 2021, Bauer recorded an 8-5 record, 2.59 ERA, 1.00 WHIP, and 137 strikeouts in 107.2 innings thrown. At the time of his forced administrative leave, his WHIP and strikeout total led Major League Baseball.
