Why Is QB Stetson Bennett Absent? Rams Coach McVay Updates On The Status

It appeared going into the 2023 season that the Rams’ backup quarterback would be Stetson Bennett, a fourth-round selection in the draft. However, the team’s strategy got somewhat more hazy when he was inexplicably added on the non-football injury list at the beginning of the season.

The former quarterback for Georgia is still not back with the club, and it doesn’t seem like he will be anytime soon.

After being put on the reserve/non-football injury list on September 13, head coach Sean McVay stated that it is unlikely the rookie quarterback would return to the squad this season.

“He’s doing well,” McVay said Monday. “I would say there’s really no updates in regard to him returning back with us.

“I’m not ready to say that he won’t be back with us at all this year, but it’s probably less likely than it is likely he would be.”

Bennett, 26, was sidelined with a right shoulder injury on September 10 during the Rams’ season-opening victory over Seattle.

At the time, McVay stated that he would rather keep Bennett’s NFI list placement details “in-house.”

“There are certain things that I think are a little bit bigger and more important, and out of respect for the particulars and the specifics, (I) want to be able to keep it in-house,” McVay said Sept. 13, per The Associated Press.

It gave me great encouragement to hear that he’s doing so well, McVay said.

“Got a chance to hear his voice and he sounds really good, and that was really cool to hear.”

Bennett was selected by the Rams with the 128th overall pick in the fourth round of the 2023 NFL Draft. It was expected that he would support Matthew Stafford, the starter. In the wake of Bennett’s injury, Brett Rypien of the Los Angeles practice squad is probably going to assume the position.

Bennett led the Georgia Bulldogs to consecutive College Football Playoff titles in 2021 and 2022 when he was a student-athlete. 66 touchdowns, 21 interceptions, and 8,429 throwing yards are the highlights of his collegiate career.
