Maryland Offensive Coordinator Kevin Sumlin Arrested For DUI Charge

The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office reports that assistant head coach and co-offensive coordinator for Maryland, Kevin Sumlin, was detained over the weekend for driving while intoxicated in Florida. The arrest happened in Tampa at roughly one in the morning on Saturday, during the Terrapins’ bye week. The encounter did not include an accident or property damage.

Sumlin declined to be arrested and entered a not guilty plea. The maximum punishment for the charge against him is six months in prison. The investigation states that Sumlin rejected a breathalyzer test, which could have resulted in a one-year license suspension.

Information on the event was provided by Taylor Lyons of DBK News, who said:

“The incident took place during Maryland’s bye week. Sumlin’s listed attorney declined to comment. A spokesperson for Maryland football did not immediately respond to request for comment. Sumlin was arrested around 1 a.m. Saturday on U.S. Highway 301 in Tampa, Florida. There was no crash or damage to property.”

Later on Saturday morning, the Maryland football staff member was freed on a $500 cash bail, according to his record.

The event happened during Maryland’s bye week, and the school is keeping an eye on the circumstances.

After serving as head coach at Texas A&M from 2012 to 2017 and Arizona from 2018 to 20, Sumlin joined the Maryland staff in February.

When Johnny Manziel was a college player, he was the head coach of the Aggies.

“Maryland Athletics is aware of the incident this past weekend involving football coach Kevin Sumlin,” the university said in a statement. “As this is an ongoing investigation, we will have no further comment.”
