Mike Elias said, with caution, that the Baltimore Orioles would like to explore contract extensions for some of their finest young players.

One remaining issue as the AL East champs enter the summer is whether the general manager can pull it done.
They have one of the strongest young talent cores in baseball and appear to be set up for long-term success.
“We asked a lot of them, and they delivered, so any shortcomings that anyone perceives with the 2023 campaign should be directed towards me.”

There would be much more excitement and possibility if the owners were willing to open their wallets and spend a bit more money to assist them in climbing to the top. The trouble is that Orioles ownership never appears inclined to do so, and when questioned about the potential of greater spending next season on Thursday, general manager Mike Elias did not provide a promising response.
The Orioles, who have 101 wins this season, have a roster full of outstanding young players with lots of team control, but they may attempt to be proactive about extensions.

Asked whether fans should expect the Orioles to have a higher payroll next season, Mike Elias replied, “It’s Day 1 of the offseason.” He said plans for the offseason are already being discussed in the Warehouse, but it’s too early to get into specifics publicly.
“We work quietly on this in the background,” Elias explained. “I don’t want to be the one now talking about it, but obviously that’s a part of our job as a front office.”

According to Spotrac, the Orioles’ 2023 payroll of just over $71 million was the third-lowest in baseball, trailing only the Pittsburgh Pirates and Oakland A’s.
When it comes to money, they aren’t the clubs you want to be associated with, especially in a division that includes big-money teams like the New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox, and Toronto Blue Jays, not to mention one of the brightest teams in Tampa Bay.
