“I think he’s already a franchise quarterback. He’s a good young man. He’s passionate about the game of football,” Fitzgerald told the AP’s Rob Maaddi of Murray. “Playing quarterback in the NFL in my opinion is the most difficult thing in sports. I think (Murray) has grown a great deal and I’m excited for when he gets back on the field. He’ll be able to show the world what he’s capable of and how he can lead a franchise.”

Murray was selected first overall by Arizona in the 2019 NFL Draft. However, it hasn’t resulted in much success, as the Cardinals have only had one postseason appearance in that span, losing in the Wild Card round. Fitzgerald, though, believes he is the right guy for the position and that the Cardinals should continue to develop around him.

Fitzgerald stated that he worked with Murray during training camp and seen his eagerness to return to the field. Due to an ACL injury, the quarterback has been out since December. After that injury, the Cardinals decided to start over, hiring a new coach (Jonathan Gannon) and general manager (Monti Ossenfort).

Murray was released from the physically unable to perform (PUP) list on Monday. Nonetheless, he did not return to practice this week and is still “weeks away from playing,” according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Murray’s future with the Cardinals is still up in the air, according to Schefter’s colleague Dan Graziano. Finally, Monti Ossenfort, the team’s first-year general manager, and head coach Jonathan Gannon have no loyalty to Murray.
