McIlroy and Matt Fitzpatrick were one up with two holes to play at Marco Simone GC when Patrick Cantlay followed a penultimate-hole birdie with a 45-footer at the par-five last to grab a stunning one-up victory for him and Wyndham Clark.
Cantlay’s birdie spurred wild celebrations from the American squad, who waved their USA-branded baseball hats in the air in response to comments from European supporters over the past FedExCup winner’s lack of headgear.

And, as emotions rose in the parking lot, an infuriated McIlroy could be heard saying, ‘This can’t happen, this can’t happen – it’s a f*****g disgrace,’ prompting a security guard to intervene before teammate Shane Lowry walked him to a waiting BMW 4×4.
Donald recounted what enraged McIlroy during the celebrations of Joe LaCava, Patrick Cantlay’s caddy, at the end of an American fourball victory. McIlroy’s wrath was subsequently captured on video in the car park of Marco Simone Golf Club, when he was hurried into a vehicle by his colleague Shane Lowry.

“We love this event because of the passion but we want to do it the right way,” Donald stated. “Obviously Rory felt like the line was crossed on the 18th green.”
Cantlay converted a 43ft putt, with McIlroy still waiting to play. McIlroy and Matt Fitzpatrick missed, meaning victory for Cantlay and Wyndham Clark. “I saw it unfold when Patrick made that putt,” Donald said. “Joe was waving his hat. There was some hat waving going on throughout the day from the crowd. Not [from] our players. I talked to Rory. He politely asked Joe to move aside. He was in his line of vision. He stood there and didn’t move for a while and continued to wave the hat, so Rory was upset about that.”
Rory McIlroy was belligerent leaving the golf course even dropping F-bombs with children present.

Among the European players on the green during the dispute were Tommy Fleetwood, Shane Lowry, and Justin Rose, who continued into the car park while McIlroy vented his rage at LaCava.
Caddie for Justin Thomas As McIlroy was pointing and yelling at someone outside the clubhouse, thought to be LaCava, Jim “Bones” Mackay seemed to try to mediate the situation, with Lowry intervening to take McIlroy away from the confrontation and into a waiting car to leave the course.
