Take A Look At Worst Calls By Umpire Angel Hernandez

Angel Hernandez is Major League Baseball’s worst umpire. He’s maintained that title for years and appears to be doing all in his power to keep it for many more seasons to come.

If you need any more proof, go no farther than his hilariously awful performance in August at the Yankees-Marlins game in Miami. Hernandez, who had recently returned to work after missing much of the first few months of the season, missed 15 calls in the game and was constantly chastised by the broadcasters for calls that were clearly incorrect.

Hernandez has sparked outrage among fans throughout the league for a seemingly never-ending string of dubious rulings.

Hernandez, who was born in Cuba, has even gotten into trouble with the league he works for, suing Major League Baseball in 2017 for claimed racial discrimination since he hadn’t been assigned a World Series game since 2005 and had been passed over for crew chief.

A U.S. District Court in Cincinnati dismissed the umpire’s petition, which also alleged that former Chief Baseball Officer Joe Torre maintained a vendetta against him since 2001.

Fans may have considered themselves fortunate to have seen Hernandez, 61, umpire just one game in 2023, but he has neither retired nor been sacked.

Angel Hernandez really missed a significant portion of the season due to a medical condition that arose during spring training.

However, after overcoming his issues, he started umpiring at Triple-A in June and botched a call in his first game back.

Hernandez missed 23 calls in ONE SINGLE GAME during a July game between the Yankees and the Orioles.

He also made 18 errors in a Dodgers-Marlins game.

According to the baseball analytics firm Codify, Hernandez has missed 81 accurate calls behind the plate in just SIX games by the first week of September.

MLB fans will recall one of Hernandez’s more recent mishaps, which occurred during a Brewers-Phillies “Sunday Night Baseball” game on ESPN in 2022.

With the Brewers leading 1-0 in the bottom of the ninth, then-Milwaukee closer Josh Hader threw a 3-2 fastball to Phillies outfielder Kyle Schwarber that was obviously outside at 98 mph.

Schwarber, who had been watching Hernandez’s terrible calls all night, released his frustration on Hernandez in an explosive rage, tossing his bat and yelling at the umpire.

In the ninth inning of a 2013 game between the A’s and the Indians, Oakland infielder Adam Rosales thought he had hit a game-tying home run when Hernandez intervened.

Rosales’ blast to left field appeared to fall higher than the top of the wall, but the umpire determined that the ball stayed in the park, resulting in an A’s loss.

These are just a few to mention, he has done worse in 32 years of his career.

Just last month, Hernandez filed a complaint against MLB, saying that the league was racist for not allowing him to umpire in recent MLB playoffs and World Series.

No Angel, as the court ruled it has nothing to do with race. It’s just that you may not be good at what you do.

Unfortunately, anyone hoping for a significant change in Hernandez or any of the other subpar umpires will have to wait a while. Before they can do anything, MLB and the MLBPA’s CBA expires in 2026.

These batters are straight up PUNISHED by Hernandez for having a good eye. It’s disgraceful.
