WR Chase Claypool Takes A Shot At Bears, Does Not Likes Where He Is Placed

Few players have been more representative of the Chicago Bears’ issues this season than wide receiver Chase Claypool, but even he believes the organization is going about things incorrectly.

WR Chase Claypool Takes A Shot At Bears, Does Not Likes Where He Is Placed

Little has gone right for the Chicago Bears this season, which is understandable given their 0-3 start. Chase Claypool is part of the problem, as he has already been scrutinized for his lack of effort in Chicago’s season-opening 38-20 defeat to Green Bay.

Claypool was harshly chastised for a disappointing performance in Week 1 when most people last heard from him. The former second-round selection was acquired midway last year with the hopes of being the primary weapon for quarterback Justin Fields, especially after the Bears handed away the No. 32 overall choice in the 2023 NFL Draft.

The game was so awful that Claypool allegedly apologized to his teammates after the Bears threatened to deactivate or possibly move him. Claypool has improved since then, but not to the point where he could be mistaken for the Bears’ No. 1 receiver.

After going catchless on two targets in Week 1, Claypool was benched, but he had eight targets in Week 2, hauling in three receptions for 36 yards and scoring his first touchdown since joining the Bears in a trade last season. Claypool was reintroduced as a starter in Week 3 and caught one of four targets for 15 yards.

Claypool was asked on Friday whether he believes he’s been put in the ideal position to show what he can accomplish as a Bear. Claypool is said to have had a’seven-second pause’ before saying “No.”

Courtney Cronin of ESPN subsequently tweeted a transcript of Claypool’s words, and he didn’t sound any happier following his “No” response.

“Would you say it’s not ideal?”

“No, I wouldn’t say that. I think every situation has the ability to be ideal and I think we’re just working towards that. I’m not going to say that. I wouldn’t say it’s not an ideal place for me. Obviously there’s other places — you can say, ‘Oh, I want to be on the best offense with the highest passing yards’ but that doesn’t happen in football. You just have to make due with what you got.”

“What is the best place for them to put you in for you to succeed?”

“You know, I’II let them decide that.  I’m not going to give any pointers. That’s their job to decide and l’ll just do what they tell me to do.”

You might argue that Claypool is simply being honest, but the 0-3 Bears aren’t exactly in a situation where complete honesty will do much help right now.

Even by Bears standards, this has been a dismal season, with quarterback Justin Fields, head coach Matt Eberflus, and maybe even general manager Ryan Poles facing concerns about their future in Chicago unless something drastic changes.
