Magic Johnson has turned down NBA ownership chances with the Golden State Warriors, Atlanta Hawks, and Detroit Pistons in the past, but the New York Knicks are the only club he would consider purchasing.

Magic Johnson On Knicks Ownership: “Only team I would actually probably think about”

Johnson, who had owned a portion of the Los Angeles Lakers until selling his position in 2010, currently has stakes in the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Washington Commanders. If an NBA franchise were next, Johnson believes the Los Angeles Lakers would be #1 on his list, but he’d also consider purchasing the New York Knicks.

Johnson told the Associated Press during a visit to a YMCA in New York,”If there’s an opportunity, first I’d definitely go with the Lakers because that’s who I am. I’ve been a part of the family for 40 years,” Johnson said in an appearance on the Rise and Schein Podcast. “But, if I ever decide to do something that’s not with the Lakers, I’d probably only do something with the Knicks because I love the fanbase, I love the Garden and what the Knicks organization stands for. But you know I’m a Lakers man through and through.”

think because of the way fans love basketball you might have to think about that one, because I love coming to New York and going to the Garden and watching the Knicks play. I love being with fans who are so passionate about their team and the Knick fans are, and they’re smart. They’re smart basketball fans, so I would have to think about that one. I think that other than that, I would probably never think about ever being a part of another franchise.”

Johnson, 64, became an NBA superstar with the Lakers, and his devotion to the franchise has kept him from pursuing other ownership chances in the league.

NBA fans may be hesitant to see Johnson return to an organization given his troubles with the Lakers’ front office, but the prospect of him working with the Knicks one day is intriguing.
