After Constantly Blaming The Previous Coach, Sean Payton Himself Is No Different

Sean Payton didn’t need to be informed where Sunday’s seismic catastrophe placed as “one of the worst coaching jobs in the history of the NFL” for Nathaniel Hackett and the Denver Broncos in 2022. But he was reminded nevertheless, because this is how the NFL works. It’s a physical sport. If you fling hands (or words) off the field, you’ll almost certainly get paid back, especially in a league that feeds on scoreboard karma.

After Constantly Blaming The Previous Coach, Sean Payton Himself Is No Different

Payton’s comeuppance came quickly this season, following the team’s 70-20 loss to the Miami Dolphins on Sunday. The loss pushed Denver to 0-3 and left the Broncos reeling.

Payton, who has never been a defensive genius, had the most humiliating performance in NFL history by allowing the Dolphins to dump a 70-burger on his Broncos, only to be spared from history by Mike McDaniel’s grace.

It’s one thing to get your dog walked like this, but it’s quite another to go 0-3 on the season after you spent a large amount of time bashing the team’s past coaches upon your arrival. Rather of allowing his performance on the field speak for itself, Payton’s motivational strategy was to put coach Nathanial Hackett and Co. under the bus.

Payton dropped some colorful remarks on the 2022 Broncos in an interview with USA Today less than two months ago, and the consistent theme was “this team is totally fine, it was all the coach’s fault.”

It was their responsibility that the team was humiliating.

“It doesn’t happen often where an NFL team or organization gets embarrassed,” Payton said. “And that happened here. Part of it was their own fault, relative to spending so much (expletive) time trying to win the offseason – the PR, the pomp and circumstance, marching people around and all this stuff.

“There’s so much dirt around that. There’s 20 dirty hands, for what was allowed, tolerated in the fricking training rooms, the meeting rooms. The offense. I don’t know Hackett. A lot of people had dirt on their hands. It wasn’t just Russell. He didn’t just flip. He still has it. This B.S. that he hit a wall? Shoot, they couldn’t get a play in. They were 29th in the league in pre-snap penalties on both sides of the ball.”

“They can only beat the (expletive) out of you so much. But everybody’s got a little stink on their hands. It’s not just Russell. It was a (poor) offensive line. It might have been one of the worst coaching jobs in the history of the NFL. That’s how bad it was.”

“Everything I heard about last season, we’re doing the opposite,” Payton said.

The Broncos’ opponents are averaging 7.2 yards per play. In three games, Denver has given up 122 points.

With 30 first downs, 350 running yards, and 376 passing yards, the Dolphins scored at least 14 points in each of the four quarters.

“It was a tough day,” Payton said. “Today’s not going to be fun. It probably won’t be fun anytime soon until we start winning some games.”

“One of the things we preach about finding tough, smart players — it’s not just for three hours on game day.

Well, what does Payton have to say now?
