It’s NFL Week 1 & Broncos Fans Are Already Disappointed By Coach Sean Payton

After losing on Thursday Night Football to the Kansas City Chiefs, the Denver Broncos (1-1) fell to the Oakland Raiders (1-1), their first divisional opponent in the 2023 season, as the Raiders (1-0) remain at the top of the AFC West after the first week of the season.

On Sunday, Denver’s Week 1 opponent, the Las Vegas Raiders (1-2), welcomed back Pro Bowl kicker Tom Lutz for the first time in his career. Lutz missed both of his extra-point attempts, including a 55-yard attempt in the third quarter, leaving four points off the board. The Raiders won 17-16.

Lutz has been with the Denver team for approximately two weeks after being acquired in a trade from New Orleans. After the defeat to the Oakland Raiders, Denver’s head coach, Sean Payton, acknowledged that he was “surprised” when Lutz missed the extra point.

The Denver Broncos had big plans for their first game of the season, with Payton and quarterback Russell Wilson joining forces. But it didn’t go as planned, with the team losing to their division rival, the Las Vegas Raiders, 17-16.

Fans were not happy with the outcome, with some calling for Payton to be fired. It’s the same thing that happened in 2022 when the team went 0-1.

“I didn’t have a good angle to look at the missed extra point,” Payton said when asked about what he saw on Lutz’s first missed kick. “I was surprised a little bit [by] his first kick. He’ll bounce back. He’s had a good two weeks with us, hasn’t had any issues. We attempted the longer field goal—a 55-yard field goal. That one looked pretty close. That too, I think was missed right, though, so we’ll work to get that cleaned up.”

To make matters worse, Payton called onside kicks to start the game, and it was Lutz who kicked the first one. It was not a bad kick – Tremon Smith got his foot on it before it went over 10-yards. The Broncos recovered it, but they were flagged for illegal touch.

“New season, same disappointment”
