Portland State Coach Bruce Barnum Says A Player Got His Ear ‘Ripped Off’ During Game

The damage one Vikings player sustained during Portland State’s season-opening 81-7 loss to Oregon was maybe even more horrifying than the final score. Coach Barnum gives details of the injury.

Portland State Coach Bruce Barnum Says A Player Got His Ear ‘Ripped Off’ During Game

Portland State coach Bruce Barnum said his team escaped any serious injuries on Tuesday’s episode of “The Bald Faced Truth” podcast, with the exception of one anonymous player who had “his ear ripped off.”

Here is Barnum providing the grisly specifics.

“We’re fine. Knock on wood, we had one guy get his ear ripped off,” Barnum told “The Bald Faced Truth.”

“They sewed it back on, and now they say he has a concussion. So, he’s out. But I think he’s fine. He talked to me today.”

Later, Barnum stated that the player had suffered “not the whole ear, but a partial ear detachment.”

“I think it was from when we got his helmet knocked off and I think his ear didn’t come out of his helmet,” Barnum said. “They were sewing him up. I guess that means you have a concussion. And we’re making sure he’s fine, and he’ll sit out this game.”

This next Saturday, when the Vikings travel to play Wyoming, the injured player won’t be able to participate.

“He’s out,” Barnum said, “but I think he’s fine.”

The outclassed Vikings were down by 22-7 after one quarter, 50-7 at halftime, and 67-7 early in the third. The game’s last points were scored by Oregon.

Bo Nix, the quarterback for Oregon, passed for 287 yards and three touchdowns, while four Ducks also scored on the ground. Jordan James gained 86 yards while scoring three touchdowns.

Portland State quarterback Dante Chachere completed just 5 of 14 passes for 35 yards and one touchdown, and no Vikings player had more than 17 yards receiving.

Because to Oregon’s 81-point performance, The Duck had to do 546 push-ups.

The athlete who suffered the horrifying ear damage was not named by Barnum, but he did say that he wouldn’t be participating in Week 2.

On Saturday, September 9, Portland State will play Wyoming in its second game of the year. It will be the team’s final contest against an FBS team this season.

The Ducks have won each of Portland State and Oregon’s previous six meetings, with the Ducks suffering the defeat in Week 1.
