NFL PUP List Rules 2023 Explained
What Is the NFL PUP List?
NFL teams utilize the PUP list as a roster classification for players who suffered injuries prior to the start of training camp.
A player is added to the active/PUP list when he is put on the PUP list at the beginning of training camp. He is included in the team’s 90-man roster and is permitted to attend meetings but not practices. The athlete must come off the PUP list if he practices even once throughout training camp.
An active/PUP classification frequently doesn’t mean anything significant. Many of the players on the aforementioned list will have their names taken off the active/PUP list during training camp, allowing them to begin the season on schedule.
However, if a player is still injured by the time the regular season arrives, he’ll be transferred to the reserve/PUP list.
Report: The #Cardinals would owe QB Kyler Murray $37 million in 2024, $29M in 2025 and $26M in 2026 in injury guarantees if he can’t pass a physical before March, per Mike Florio.

How many games does an NFL player miss after going on the PUP list?
After the 53-man roster cuts, players who are put on the Reserve/PUP list must sit out at least the first four games of the NFL season. Certainly, players can miss longer with this classification, but at the very least, the PUP player will miss the first four games of the season. This has altered recently since, before the 2022 season, a player had to sit out the first six games of the year if they began the season with the PUP classification.

Do NFL players on the PUP list get paid?
Being paid their full wages when they are inactive and unable to train or participate in games is one benefit associated with players who are given the PUP classification at the start of the season. Players are not punished for being unable to perform since the requirement for this list is that the injury occurred while engaging in football-related activity.

I’ve seen A LOT of people disrespecting the man. He’s been winning games for this team his whole career by making plays like this. Best secondary in the NFL. pic.twitter.com/lLcMszzWSs

What Is the Difference Between PUP and NFI Designations?
Both the PUP and non-football injury (NFI) lists call for four-game absences at the start of the regular season, thus they are identical in many respects. There are distinctions between the two labels, though.
Players who sustained injuries while taking part in NFL activities are placed on the PUP list. For instance, a player will be put on PUP if they were wounded while participating in a team-sponsored weightlifting session or minicamp.
For injuries that happened outside of NFL facilities, consult the NFI list. Nyheim Hines, a running back with the Bills, will miss the whole season after suffering injuries in a jet ski accident and will be added to the NFI list.
