Jerry Jones Reveals Cowboys Almost Drafted QB Jalen Hurts

Dak Prescott is an excellent quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys. The Cowboys have consistently been Super Bowl contenders since the 30-year-old great was selected in the 2016 NFL Draft, despite the fact that he has struggled in pivotal contests despite frequently playing well. Jerry Jones on the other hand had different plans all along.

Jerry Jones Reveals Cowboys Almost Drafted QB Jalen Hurts

As a result of the team’s unexpected trade for former 49ers quarterback Trey Lance, speculation over Dak Prescott’s future with the Cowboys has gained attention recently.

If the team had selected one of the league’s top young quarterbacks in the 2020 NFL Draft, it seems that the team’s purchase of Lance might not have happened at all.

Nevertheless, many were shocked when the team acquired Trey Lance from the San Francisco 49ers on Friday. In a further twist, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said that before selecting Dak Prescott as the third overall choice in the 2021 NFL Draft, he had not spoken with McCarthy or Prescott’s coach.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones surprisingly admitted that the organization was interested in picking Jalen Hurts had he possibly dropped further in the draft when discussing the team’s decision to give up fourth-round selection money for Lance.

Jones stated the following while speaking about the choice to trade a fourth-round pick for Trey Lance:

“Two years ago, we were looking at a Philadelphia quarterback,” Jones said.

“But looking at him, had he fallen to us there we would have drafted him. It is our plan when we can but it very seldom happens to have someone of high enough quality to be there at the right place with our draft pick. And this one worked [Lance] and so we’re excited about it,” added Jones.”

Given that information, the Cowboys probably thought Hurts would be selected in the third round. Hurts was chosen by Philadelphia instead, and the rest is history.

But it’s an intriguing “what if” situation. Hurts was considered a project by the Eagles when they chose Carson Wentz as their starting quarterback at the time. But far sooner than anticipated, Jalen Hurts took over as the starter.
