List Of NFL Coaches On Hot Seat 2023: Who’s Most Likely To Be Fired?

The 2023 NFL regular season will begin with the opening kickoff in less than a month. 32 NFL teams will compete to win the Vince Lombardi trophy. Although the 49ers have the greatest Super Bowl chances of any Californian club, the Chargers aren’t far behind.

The majority of coaching changes in the NFL take place either on Black Monday, the day after the regular season ends, or later that week. However, as we’ve observed in previous seasons, NFL organizations are more than prepared to fire coaches early on if they feel a change is necessary.

We also know that many NFL clubs won’t even try to make the postseason, which will ultimately condemn several coaches to the league’s firing squad between now and the conclusion of the season.

Five head coaches were let go by their teams in 2022. Three of them—Matt Rhule, Frank Reich, and rookie coach Nathaniel Hackett—were fired during the campaign, continuing a recent pattern in the NFL of early firings.

List Of NFL Coaches To Be Fired In 2023

Mike McCarthy – Cowboys

The remarkable comeback by the Dallas Cowboys in the divisional round shouldn’t have any bearing on Mike McCarthy’s job stability.

He has led the Cowboys to the playoffs twice in his three seasons in charge of the team and has a 155-97-2 career record.

McCarthy’s job security should be greatly impacted by the team’s failure to win the NFC Championship for a third consecutive season despite a significantly stronger defence and a quarterback worth $160 million.

In his three seasons with the Cowboys and his last five seasons overall as an NFL head coach, McCarthy has one postseason victory. Only twice in 16 years has he won multiple playoff games in the same season.

In terms of odds to win the NFC Championship, the Cowboys trail only the Philadelphia Eagles and San Francisco 49ers.

Josh McDaniels – Raiders

Even though McDaniels is just in his second season with the Raiders, he is coming off a disastrous season in which the club went 6-11, only one year after they qualified for the playoffs under interim coach Rich Bisaccia.

Jimmy Garoppolo has replaced Derek Carr as the team’s quarterback, and much of Josh McDaniels’ future depends on how well he can manage a Garoppolo-led attack.

In addition, McDaniels will have to manage some difficult dynamics with his players, most notably Davante Adams, a close buddy of Carr.

Given his expertise in offensive strategy, McDaniels could be able to turn things around for the Raiders in 2023.

Still, in a loaded AFC and with a career record of 17-28 as a head coach, he could end up with a deck stacked against him if things don’t improve.

Brandon Staley- Chargers

Few NFL coaches have seen as much of a decline in popularity as Los Angeles Chargers’ Brandon Staley. The Chargers have a greater than 50% probability of making the playoffs and are a remote contender to win the Super Bowl.

Although the third-year NFL head coach has witnessed an increase in his year-end victory count (from nine to 10 in 2022), there is also the added pressure that comes with having the highest-paid quarterback in the league on your squad.

The team has entered the playoffs five times in the past 15 years, losing four times in the divisional stage and once in the wild-card round in 2022, when the Chargers blew a 27-0 lead and suffered an ugly 31-30 loss to Jacksonville.

Staley changed his offence in a few ways. He hopes that bringing Kellen Moore on board will help the team’s inconsistent play. Moore was hired away from the Cowboys.

Ron Rivera- Commanders

In 2022, the Washington Commanders possibly lived up to expectations. Regardless of the team’s performance on the field, Ron Rivera’s job security may be in jeopardy due to ongoing club strife and new ownership.

A third consecutive sub-.500 season didn’t help, but organizational turmoil is the main reason he’s on the hot seat. A fourth consecutive season like this one may be the turning moment.

The lowest victory total in the NFC East for the Commanders in 2023 is 7.5.

In his three seasons in Washington, Rivera has been a vital player, helping to steer the team through a name change and many significant scandals involving exiting owner Daniel Snyder.

Nevertheless, in his three seasons there, Washington hasn’t had a winning record and has only made one playoff appearance. Another seven- or eight-win season could have the owners consider a change.

Todd Bowles – Buccaneers

Todd Bowles should have job security as the Buccaneers embark on a big rebuilding process that will begin with Baker Mayfield on a one-year contract in the second year of a five-year contract.

The Glazer family has a reputation for being impatient with rebuilds and the coaches overseeing them. Lovie Smith was dismissed after clearing up the Greg Schiano debacle and increasing the team’s victory total in his second season, while Raheem Morris was fired after winning 10 games in his first season.

Bowles is also the coach with the lowest expectations out of the five in this group. The Buccaneers have a terrific defence and several reliable skill-position players, but their offensive line is inexperienced, and Baker Mayfield is anticipated to start at quarterback. Having stated that Tampa Bay ownership can’t be too upset with Bowles if he has a bad season — unless it proves to be truly disastrous.

Bowles may be blamed if a roster in transition shows no signs of vitality this season.

In Week 1 NFL odds, Bowles and the Bucs are a significant underdog over the Minnesota Vikings.

Robert Saleh- Jets

The Jets’ defence has improved under Saleh, who has made it one of the league’s top groups. The Jets’ three-win improvement between his first and second seasons in New York was aided by that.

The Jets are expected to be competitive in 2023, therefore he is currently facing his biggest test to date in his third season.

Many people assume the Jets will be a contender in 2023 as a result of the acquisition of Aaron Rodgers. Given the strength of their squad, they very well may be, but if they were to fall short of those expectations, Saleh may wind up becoming the team’s scapegoat.

Early in the season, he definitely deserves to be patient, but it’s worth considering whether Woody Johnson.

Dennis Allen- Saints

You don’t have long-term job security if your general manager has to publicly announce your return after one season, as Mickey Loomis did with Dennis Allen after the New Orleans Saints season ended with just seven victories and no playoff berth.

Allen is in a difficult situation because the team’s salary limit difficulties will likely continue for at least another season, despite having a good defense and (possibly) offensive steadiness with Derek Carr following last season’s injury-fueled quarterback carousel.

Sean Payton may have essentially hand-picked Allen to replace him as the head coach in New Orleans, but Allen had a 7-10 record in his first season with the Saints and a 15-38 career record as a head coach. If the New Orleans ownership has another poor season, they could consider taking the team in a new direction after a few stagnant seasons.

Kevin Stefanski- Browns

In his first year with the Browns in 2020, Stefanski made a big impression, guiding them to an 11-5 record, their first playoff victory since 1994, and garnering Coach of the Year honors in the process. The team has since stalled, and his status has been questioned.

Stefanski offers several justifications for why the Browns haven’t returned to the playoffs. In 2021, Baker Mayfield had a severe regression, and Deshaun Watson missed the most of the 2022 season due to injury. In addition, the team’s defense has struggled at times and lacked reliable players save All-Pro Myles Garrett.

However, going into 2023, the Browns seem to have dealt with those problems.

Arthur Smith – Falcons

In his first position as a head coach at any level, Arthur Smith was positioned for an early failure. In guiding one of the league’s poorest squads to 14 victories over the course of two years, he has unquestionably surpassed expectations.

Though surpassing expectations at the beginning of your tenure doesn’t ensure long-term job stability, as Kliff Kingsbury discovered last year. For Smith to gain Arthur Blank’s trust for 2024 and beyond, he may need to make a significant improvement in 2023.

The second-lowest playoff odds in the division for the Falcons are +120.
