Saints Rookie Blake Grupe After Winning Stopped By Security Due To Misunderstanding

Blake Grupe, a rookie kicker for the New Orleans Saints, is diminutive by NFL standards. He is noted as being 156 pounds and 5’7″, making him the smallest and lightest member on the club.

That could have had an impact on how his first preseason NFL game went.

As time ran out, Grupe made a 31-yard field goal to give the Saints a 26-24 victory over the visiting Kansas City Chiefs.

His unusual NFL player physique offered him a fairly amusing narrative on Sunday.

In his NFL debut, Grupe kicked a 31-yard field goal for the Saints, giving them a 26-24 victory. However, Grupe said that the Superdome’s security rendered such all but impossible.

Grupe said on social media on Sunday night that security stopped him from leaving the stadium after the game.

He believed himself to be a spectator exiting the stadium via the Player’s Exit.

Grupe was questioned by security on other occasions as well. The rookie from Notre Dame also said that when he attempted to enter the field for pregame warmups before kickoff, security stopped him because he lacked credentials.

To be fair to Saints security, the majority of NFL athletes are big, physically talented, and uncommon. And simply by glancing at them, you can tell. Grupe, in comparison, is recorded as being 5-foot-7 and 156 pounds. I can easily imagine someone mistaking him for a non-NFL player if he weren’t sporting the Saints’ outfit.

I believe that if Grupe keeps producing his kicks, mishaps like these won’t occur again.

In his lone season with Notre Dame, Grupe made 14 of 19 field goal tries, but he made all 49 of his extra point attempts.

Lutz has been a member of the Saints since 2016, but he is coming off of his worst campaign, in which he made only 23 of his career’s 31 field goals, or 74.2 percent.

Grupe became an undrafted free agent and signed with the Saints in April.

The 24-year-old only had one chance on Sunday, but he made the most of it by making a walk-off 31-yard field goal to help the Saints defeat the Super Bowl winners 26-24.
