Coach Sean Payton Is Setting Some Rules For Players. Take A Look At His Four Major Rules
Regarding the new age of Broncos football, Sean Payton is not playing around. A distinctive set of preseason norms is part of the culture’s broad transformation.
On Friday against the Arizona Cardinals, Payton, who is in his first season as Denver’s head coach, will preside over his first game with the team. His history suggests that the first team won’t play much, if at all, despite the fact that he hasn’t yet provided a detailed plan for how he will employ his players.

Regardless of whether players like Pat Surtain, Jerry Jeudy, and Russell Wilson play or not, they will be expected to adhere to a very strict set of rules once their day is through (if it ever does). During his Monday media appearance at training camp, Payton outlined his team-wide mandate.

Following a game, Sean Payton has four guidelines for his NFL players:
- Players must take off their uniforms after they are done playing.
- They are not allowed to wear sunglasses.
- Bucket hats (or as Payton called them: Gilligan hats) are strictly forbidden.
- Players, regardless of status, are not allowed to take interviews during the game.
The justifications for his guidelines were not further discussed.
They’re ready. They are the law.
New coach, new day — Episode 105:
Broncos' Sean Payton Monday on what he doesn't like in preseason:
“I don’t want to see 10 guys on the field, uniforms off after we’re done playing, sunglasses, Gilligan hats on, interviews during the game, that’s what I don’t want to see.’’
— Jeff Legwold (@Jeff_Legwold) August 7, 2023
To be fair, Payton’s remarks reflected a more comprehensive viewpoint.
Although he did not say it out loud, he made it very obvious what he does not want to see from the Broncos, including that they cannot wear bucket hats or sunglasses. Players are capable of doing so.
Friday’s game between Arizona and Denver will begin at 10:00 PM ET. It will be interesting to see how players behave on the sidelines under the new rules, beyond the narratives involving Russell Wilson and the new-look club.
