According to reports, Brown, an Orioles reporter for the team’s main television network MASN, was given an indefinite suspension for properly noting the team’s terrible road record versus the Tampa Bay Rays.

The Baltimore Orioles, who had the worst record in the American League two years ago, have been one of baseball’s biggest success stories this year. However, it appears that the team’s announcers are barred from discussing how far they’ve gone in such a short period of time.

According to several sources, the Orioles banned play-by-play announcer Kevin Brown after he mentioned the team’s dismal road record against the Tampa Bay Rays in a pregame segment on July 23.

The O’s had lost more games at Tropicana Field this season than they had in the previous three seasons combined, Brown said, which an on-screen graphic mirrored. The O’s were also 0-15-1 in their last 16 meetings there.

The play-by-play announcer spoke as follows:

“The Orioles have won three of the first five games at The Trop this season after winning three of the 21 games played in St. Petersburg from 2020 to 2022.”

Did Brown’s vile comments merit a suspension? Not at all. The punishment imposed on Brown in response to the statements on video sparked significant surprise and indignation; some even argued that it amounted to speech restriction.

Brown compared the Orioles’ unheard-of winning recipe in 2023 to their previous struggles at Tropicana in the game preview.

The Orioles’ ownership took exception to that analogy, which led to Brown’s suspension.

Gary Cohen of SNY tore the Orioles’ hierarchy to shreds for suspending Brown for the New York Mets’ home series against the Chicago Cubs on Monday.

Following is Cohen’s statement in reaction to Brown’s suspension:

“During a recent game at Tropicana Field in St Petersburg. Kevin, during his opening, talked about how the Royals had had trouble winning in the past at Tropicana Field, but that they were doing better this year.

“That was really all he said. And for that, the Baltimore Orioles management decided to suspend Kevin Brown and let me just say one thing to Baltimore Orioles management. You draped yourself in humiliation when you fired John Miller and you’re doing it again. And if you don’t want Kevin Brown, there are 29 other teams who do.

“It’s a horrendous decision by the Orioles. I don’t know what they were thinking, but they’ve gotten exactly the reaction that they deserve. And it’s just a shame because the Orioles are playing so well and now they’ve diverted attention from that and now made themselves a laughingstock.”

Tom McCarthy of the Phillies, Dan Schulman of the Blue Jays, and Chris Russo of the SiriusXM Radio/MLB Network were among the MLB commentators that defended Brown.
