Dak Prescott & Cowboys Are In Contract Extension Talks

According to reports from Texas, the Dallas Cowboys have allegedly initiated contract extension discussions to ensure Dak Prescott’s long-term future with the organization.

Dak Prescott & Cowboys Are In Contract Extension Talks

The third year of the veteran quarterback’s four-year, $160 million deal is about to begin.

Although nothing is seen as “imminent” at this point, the Cowboys are making this strategic effort to solve their financial issue and lock up their main players before the 2023 NFL season.

The Cowboys’ main worry is Prescott’s large $59.4 million cap charge for the upcoming 2024 season.

As a result, there’s a chance he’ll be around Dallas through 2024, which is the final season of his four-year, $160 million deal. He was the highest-paid quarterback at the time of signing that contract.

The Cowboys want to renegotiate Prescott’s contract, while nothing in the contract negotiations is certain. The former Mississippi State star contributes $26.8 million toward the cap this year. But in 2024, that amount will increase to $59.4 million.

In order to reach an extension agreement before having to have similar negotiations with talents Cee-Dee Lamb and Micah Parsons in the next seasons, the organization has reportedly begun “early discussions” with Prescott and his camp.

Prescott was even quoted saying that he expected an extension to happen soon: “Looking forward to an extension. When that time comes, it will happen. I’m with [director of player personnel Stephen Jones], it may just happen overnight. When it happens, it happens. It will be great.”

The Cowboys were able to restructure the quarterback’s deal earlier this summer to help them manage their financial space, though an extension announcement may still be made at any moment this season.

The goal of these discussions is to free up space for prospective contract extensions for other important members of the squad, such as star defensive player Micah Parsons and budding wide receiver CeeDee Lamb, as well as to lessen the weight of Prescott’s impending cap hit.

The team and star offensive lineman Zack Martin are still in discussions, and Martin is pressing for a bigger offer after agreeing to a six-year, $84 million contract in 2018, which made him the highest-paid offensive guard in NFL history.

Martin hasn’t turned up for camp. He is projected to earn $13.5 million this season.

The Cowboys still have complete trust in Dak Prescott, despite the fact that he threw a career-high 15 interceptions in 2022.
