New York Mets Contemplating Moves as Trade Deadline Looms

The New York Mets have to make a critical decision as the trade deadline is near. Despite enduring a disappointing first half of the 2023 season, the Mets’ front office has to consider a proactive approach to salvage their playoff hopes.

With high World Series expectations, the Mets find themselves with six games under 0.500 at the midseason mark. Teams like the Miami Marlins, Cincinnati Reds, and Arizona Diamondbacks, surpassed the Mets in the NL standings. However, there is still some optimism that these teams might decline in the second half, allowing the Mets the opportunity to come back.

For the Mets to secure the wildcard spot, they would have to make an impressive comeback. Winning around 45 of their remaining 72 games. Their current roster has fans doubt whether they will even be able to achieve this feat.

Considering the large investment made in the 2023 season, Steven Cohen is open to improving the team, without compromising its long-term prospects. While the top prospects are off-limits for the Mets, Cohen has shown a willingness to allocate resources to improve the roster.

One of the Mets’ primary concerns is pitching, both in the starting rotation and bullpen. The Mets’ disappointing performances in these areas also contribute to the additional pressure they receive on offense. They would need to acquire a reliable mid-rotation starter, along with some dependable bullpen arms, this would provide the much-needed stability to the Mets.

General Manager Billy Eppler also faces the challenge of striking deals that improve the team without depleting its prospect pool. One approach could be to take on unfavorable contracts for valuable assets, imitating the Mets’ acquisition of Chris Flexen in the Trevor Gott trade.

With the Mets losing hope, they have a critical 15-game stretch ahead of them. While the first half of the season proved disappointing, there is still some optimism that the Mets can make a comeback, and surprise everyone in the second half.
