As there were no witnesses to Campbell’s passing, it is impossible to determine exactly what happened, but specialists believe that it was a heart-related problem.

According to Campbell’s brother, Patrick, who spoke to Delaware Online, the hiker was found dead in Florida and most likely died of a heart collapse.

In 2007, Campbell was engaged in a bicycle collision with a heavy car. Despite suffering a skull injury, Joe was able to live. He also spent six months in a coma.

Joe was still able to remember the Super Bowl-winning season before he passed away, even though his memory started to fail after that episode.

“Everybody looked up to him,” longtime friend and former Sallie’s teammate Dennis Kelly told the outlet. “Everybody loves a winner, and Joe crossed that threshold into being a pro athlete.”

Campbell was a “great football player and he was a great guy, too,” Cowboys veteran Randy White, a teammate of Campbell’s at Maryland, told Delaware Online. “You get news like this, it sets you back. … I’ll remember him as a long, lean guy from Delaware who came in there and dominated at that defensive end position.”

“The thoughts and prayers of the entire Raider Nation are with the Campbell family at this time,” the Raiders said in a statement Wednesday.

Before being sold to the Oakland Raiders in 1980, the 6-6, 254-pound defense played with the Saints from 1977 to that point. Campbell went back to the Superdome to help the Raiders defeat the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl XV. During the 1981 season, he participated in another season of professional football with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
