Tennis Star Martina Navratilova Responds To Megan Rapinoe’s Comments On Transgender Athletes Competing In Women Sports

Megan Rapinoe, a standout for the USWNT, has criticized her nation for the way it has handled the issue of transgender athletes participating in women’s sports.

“We as a country are trying to legislate away people’s full humanity,” Rapinoe told Time magazine.“It’s particularly frustrating when women’s sports is weaponized. Oh, now we care about fairness? Now we care about women’s sports? That’s total bulls–t. And show me all the trans people who are nefariously taking advantage of being trans in sports. It’s just not happening.”

Tennis Star Martina Navratilova Responds To Megan Rapinoe’s Comments On Transgender Athletes Competing In Women’s Sports

As Megan Rapinoe prepares to compete in her final World Cup later this month, the tennis great Martina Navratilova appeared to respond to her remarks on transgender athletes participating in women’s sports.

The nine-time Wimbledon winner has advocated for the homosexual community but has opposed transgender athletes playing against naturally-born female athletes.

Navratilova added one word as the remarks spread throughout the internet.

She wrote, “Yikes.”

She praised World Athletics in March for implementing a rule excluding transgender female athletes from participating in women’s sports. It was described by her as a “step in the right direction.”

“In the wake of World Athletics’ announcement, I think the best idea would be to have ‘biological female’ and ‘biological girls’ categories and then an ‘open’ category,” she wrote in an op-ed in The Times of UK.

“Once somebody has gone through male puberty, there is no way to erase that physical advantage. You cannot simply turn back the clock, for instance by trying to lower testosterone levels,” Navratilova said.

Asked if she would embrace a biological man identifying as a woman on the U.S. women’s soccer team, even if a biological woman lost her place to him, Rapinoe declared, “Absolutely,” adding, “‘You’re taking a ‘real’ woman’s place,’ that’s the part of the argument that’s still extremely transphobic. I see trans women as real women. What you’re saying automatically in the argument—you’re sort of telling on yourself already—is you don’t believe these people are women. Therefore, they’re taking the other spot. I don’t feel that way.”

Rapinoe received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2022, the nation’s highest civilian honor, from President Biden.

Rapinoe criticized the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act (H.R. 734) in March.
