U19 FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023: Schedule, Groups, Wins & Prospects
The International Basketball Federation (FIBA) organizes the U19 FIBA Basketball World Cup, which was originally known as the FIBA Under-19 World Championship. Every four years, starting in 1979 and ending in 2007, it was held. It has been conducted twice annually since 2007. The United States, which defeated France in 2021, are the reigning champions.
On the first day of the FIBA U19 Basketball World Cup 2023, hosts Hungary won for the first time ever in the tournament, while Spain thrashed Canada and the United States crushed Madagascar’s debutants.
The finest possible opening day was provided to the fans in Debrecen as their favorite Hungary defeated Korea 85-59 in Group D.
Jan Vide had 20 points today on 8/15 shooting vs Lebanon in the FIBA U19 opener. 3 plays that stood out:
2 runners going left and a powerful iso drive. Interested to see how he does vs tougher competition throughout the tournament, but he was impressive in the U17s last year pic.twitter.com/uHGyTG2Ct6

Hungary’s defense stood out in limiting the Asian team to only 29 percent shooting, while their team won the battle of the boards 54-21. With Robert Meszlenyi adding 8 points, 7 rebounds, and 7 assists, Hungary took a 12-point lead after 10 minutes and never looked back. Peter Csataljay added 18 points.
The format is as such that the group stage will decide each team’s placement, 1-through-16, all 16 nations who made it to the U19 FIBA Basketball World Cup will have the opportunity to fight for a Gold Medal.

Izan Almansa has been the best player through the group stage period of the FIBA U19 World Cup. A modern forward, Almansa has combined "traditional big" skills like operating in the post with new-age requirements like handling the ball and initiating offense. pic.twitter.com/t31PvfkMMF

2023 U19 FIBA Basketball World Cup players to watch
Cody Williams, Colorado
Williams was one of the players I was keeping an eye on for the 2024 NBA Draft. The 6-8 forward can score in a variety of ways and already moves with the ball like a guard. He is Jalen Williams’ brother, who is a finalist for NBA Rookie of the Year in 2023.
Omaha Biliew, Iowa State
Biliew, a McDonald’s All-American, is the No. 13 talent in the class of 2023. The tall and agile 6-8 power forward plays with strong energy on the defensive end and in the paint.
Dylan Harper, Undeclared
The top player in the class of 2024 is Harper. Dylan Harper, a 6-5 left-handed combo guard with a knack for scoring, is the son of five-time NBA champion Ron Harper.

Tre Johnson, Undeclared
With offers from prestigious high-major schools like Duke, Kentucky, Kansas, Baylor, North Carolina, and more, Johnson is the third-ranked athlete in the class of 2024. The shooting guard, who is 6-5, is only a perimeter scorer.
Zaccharie Risacher, France: Risacher was another one of my prospects to watch for the 2024 NBA Draft. The 6-foot-8 forward, who plays for ASVEL in the same LNB Pro A league as 2023 lottery winners Victor Wembanyama and Bilal Coulibaly, has just completed his rookie season.
Izan Almansa, Spain: Almansa was the MVP of the FIBA U18 Euro Championship last year. This past season, the 6-10 forward participated in the Overtime Elite league in the US, averaging 9.3 points and 8.6 rebounds per game.

Alexandre Sarr, France: Another promising talent, Sarr, played in the Overtime Elite league the previous year. The 7-1 big averaged 11.1 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 1.1 blocks per game while playing with Almansa. His participation in the NBL’s Next Stars program in Australia next season.
Reynan Santos, Brazil: Santos is a 6-4 athletic guard and Brazil’s next top prospect. Averaging 16.3 points, 4.5 rebounds, 2.3 assists, and 1.3 steals per game, he shone at the U18 FIBA Americas Championship.
Ian Jackson – USA
For the third summer in a row, Ian Jackson is representing USA Basketball. The athletic guard with excellent enthusiasm, scoring ability, and defense helped USA win the FIBA U16 Americas Championship in 2021. At the FIBA U17 Basketball World Cup in 2022, USA went unbeaten, and he averaged 11.9 points, 4.6 rebounds, 1.7 assists, and 1.4 steals per game.
The Bronx, New York native will graduate from high school this year and begin his college career in 2024 at the University of North Carolina.
