What Is LSU College World Series Jello Shot Challenge? Know The Omaha Tradition

The College World Series last week is the ideal illustration of what the Tigers fandom is capable of. In only a few days, they smashed the all-time Jello Shot record at a nearby Omaha pub.

LSU College World Series Jello Shot Challenge: The Omaha Tradition

LSU supporters are a unique breed. The celebration follows the Bayou Bengals everywhere they go. They once depleted the beer supply of an Atlanta hotel during the SEC Championship, consumed all of the beer at the Rose Bowl before UCLA’s game, made Green Bay (of all places!!) scramble to find more alcohol, and consumed more than 50,000 beers during Tiger Stadium’s first game with alcohol sales.

The Louisianimals always have a wonderful time at the SEC’s wildest college town, Baton Rouge.

Omaha’s College World Series Jello Shot challenge has become a yearly event. A contest is held to determine whose team’s supporters can buy the most jello shots from Rocco’s while the teams are in action.

Kevin Culjat, the owner, started producing colored Jello shots in the hues of the eight participating teams. It was such a success that every year the fans decided to exploit it as additional means of gaining notoriety outside of the baseball diamond. Culjat then began keeping count of how many shots each fan community took throughout the course of the tournament’s 10 days.

In 2023, LSU hasn’t participated in the College World Series since 2017, and the supporters are making up for lost time. LSU broke its previous high of 29,023 on Monday, outnumbering Ole Miss.

Each participating school and the Omaha food bank receive a percentage of the proceeds. In 2022,  Ole Miss fans set a record with 18,777 shots ordered.

Although the Jell-O Shot record has been broken, LSU supporters continue to attempt to break it. And on Wednesday, when ESPN highlighted their stellar performance, it produced a funny situation.

Before realizing that the camera was blowing his cover, a young admirer who appeared fully prepared to grab a Jell-O Shot off the tray pulled away with startled eyes. It was all over his face.

Graves set a record for the most Jell-O shots ever bought by one person when he spent $30,000 on 6,000 of them before LSU’s match versus Wake Forest on Monday night. The crowd cheered before making their way over to Charles Schwab Field since that pushed LSU much over the mark.

On Tuesday night, LSU lost to Wake Forest by a score of 3-2. A rematch with Tennessee is scheduled for Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. ET as a result. The Tigers beat the Volunteers on Saturday, 6-3.

LSU ended up with an astonishing 21,435 shots. They were so far above every other fan base:

  1. Wake Forest, 5572
  2. TCU, 3117
  3. Oral Roberts, 2610
  4. Florida, 1716
  5. Tennessee, 1639
  6. Stanford, 720
  7. Virginia, 569
