The New York Yankees defeated the Seattle Mariners 3-1 at home on Tuesday night thanks to Gerrit Cole and some much-needed fire.

Yankees Gerrit Cole Wags Finger At Jose Caballero After Striking Him Out

In the seventh inning of the game, the Yankees’ star pitcher demonstrated his mastery of the mound by sending a fastball screaming over the head of Seattle infielder Jose Caballero, ensuring that the Mariners would not get the better of him.

The pitcher for the New York Yankees was managing during Tuesday night’s game against Seattle, but things seemed to turn iffy in the top of the eighth.

With two outs, Cole faced Mariners second baseman Jose Caballero and swiftly worked up a 0-2 count. Caballero then looked to take a last-second timeout before returning to the dugout. Additionally, after fouling off a ball earlier, he turned over his bat.

Tuesday night’s 3-1 victory was highlighted by the Yankees’ ace throwing one of his fastest pitches of the game and waving his finger at the Mariners’ second baseman Jose Caballero after Caballero played some mind games at the plate.

Caballero’s theatrics throughout the at-bat, which included flipping the bat after a foul ball, seemed to be upsetting Cole.

Cole threw his head back in annoyance after the first pitch of the seventh inning at-bat because Caballero took his time entering and exiting the box despite the pitch clock being in effect.

Following another delay by Caballero in entering the box, Cole purposely sent a ball far past Caballero’s head and into the net behind home plate.

“Sometimes the high fastball can be a really effective pitch…gotta change eye levels,” Cole told reporters after the game while appearing to hold back a smile.

Cabellero was finally struck out by Cole. On his way off the field, the five-time all-star gave the Mariners’ dugout a death-stare as he began to wag his finger.

After the game, Cole spoke with the media and said that his finger-wagging was in response to one from Seattle manager Scott Servais.

“Their manager had some choice words for me coming off the field,” Cole said, adding, “That’s the first time an opposing manager has wagged his finger at me.”

The Yankees are now 7-0 in 2023 when Cole takes the mound following a defeat, and they firmly attained that milestone on Tuesday even though their depleted lineup could not generate more than three runs scored. Even while expectations may not be as high as they were for Cole’s 0-2 pitch, the Yankees’ ace has continued to perform as expected.
