Ex Patriots Coach Eric Mangini Found “little arrogance” To The Manner Mac Jones Approached The Season

When Mac Jones said to the media during OTAs that he wanted to regain everyone’s respect, it attracted attention. Former Patriots defensive coordinator Eric Mangini praised Jones’ statement but chastised him for his “arrogance.”

Ex Patriots Coach Eric Mangini Found “little arrogance” To The Manner Mac Jones Approached The Season

Eric Mangini, a former Bill Belichick assistant in New England who used the word “arrogant” to characterize the rookie QB’s style, is one of these critics.

To be fair, Mangini did acknowledge Jones’ efforts to correct some of last year’s errors by accepting the blame while addressing the 33rd Team. Jones has stated that he is “going to do everything I can to earn the respect of everyone in this building again,” as an example.

“I like what he said. I like it a lot because I’ve always felt that Mac didn’t appreciate how good a situation he came into,” Mangini said, according to NESN. “He had Josh McDaniels, he had Mick Lombardi, a great offensive staff, he had as stable an organization as you could get. He had a team that played complementary football. He came from a program that was similar. It was a perfect situation for who he was. And then Josh McDaniels leaves, he talks about, ‘Oh, I’ve had multiple coordinators. It’s not that big a deal.’

“There was a little arrogance to the way he approached things. And then he found out how hard it is to win consistently in this league, and how tenuous your position is and that you probably shouldn’t go outside the New England Patriots organization if you don’t like what’s going on.”

It’s an admission that some respect has been misplaced. Jones’ performance declined in 2022, but he also made several controversial statements on the field. He allegedly sought assistance from outside the company when the offense faltered under Matt Patricia and Joe Judge.

According to former Patriots defensive coordinator Eric Mangini, acknowledging that he still needs to do some work to win over his coaches and teammates is a positive attitude.

“Now he’s in a spot where he’s talking about regaining the respect of the organization, which is good,” Mangini said. “But when you come in and there’s high expectations and you’ve been given a lot of respect, and you lose it, it’s a longer road to get that back. So, it’s positive, really upbeat that this is the approach he’s taking but this is going to be a longer road than him just making an offseason statement or tweeting out how he wants to get the respect back.”

Jones, the 15th overall selection in 2021, upset some people last season when he sought assistance from outside the team because he was dissatisfied with the offense run by Matt Patricia and Joe Judge.

In the midst of on-field rants, the quarterback passed for 2,997 yards, 14 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions.

His Pro Bowl first season, which included 22 touchdowns, 3,801 yards, and a trip to the postseason, was a sharp contrast to that.
