Broncos OT Garrett Bolles Gives Russell Wilson Haters A Heads Up: “everyone’s going to eat crow”

When Russell Wilson, his “dear” buddy, was dragged through the mud during the Denver Broncos’ five-win season, Garett Bolles was forced to eat his heart out in fury. In a blatantly unjust fashion, Wilson became a MEME—sort of like a National Lampoon—and Bolles took it personally.

Even in June, Denver Broncos left tackle Garett Bolles takes seriously his responsibility to guard quarterback Russell Wilson’s blind side.

Broncos OT Garrett Bolles Gives Russell Wilson Hates A Heads Up: “everyone’s going to eat crow”

Wilson’s 2022 season detractors and those who think Wilson won’t regain his prior level of play will “eat crow,” according to Bolles, after the team’s OTA session on Thursday.

In 2023, with Sean Payton’s new scheme, Bolles is back in the building and responsible for defending Wilson’s blindside. Bolles made it obvious how he felt about all the Wilson shade on Thursday, speaking in public for the first time really since his season-ending fractured leg sustained in Week 5.

Wilson has performed admirably in practice, according to Bolles, who is entering his ninth season on the offensive line for the Denver Broncos. Wilson also appears to be capable of regaining his prior form.

Bolles told reporters on Thursday, “He’s a great dude, he’s the same guy every single day, and he works his butt off.” And when that thing disappears, everyone will eat crow, I’m ready for it to do so.

Just before the start of the season, the team also agreed to a $245 million contract deal with Wilson.

But after that, things largely went downhill for the Broncos, who finished last in the league in scoring (16.9 points per game), as head coach Nathaniel Hackett was fired with two games remaining in the season, and Wilson finished with a  career-low 16 touchdown passes to go with a career-high 55 sacks.

Bolles stood by his quarterback despite all the commotion and vitriol that surrounded Wilson and the club the previous season.

“I think he’s phenomenal,” Bolles said Thursday. “… We knew who he was as a person, we know who is. … I love him dearly. I think he’s one of the greatest quarterbacks in the game the last 10 years. Stats don’t lie, just because you have one rough season in the last 10 years you can’t dictate what type of guy, his personality, what he goes through.” He added that he was “angry [last season] with what came out” and that he takes it “very personal.”

“He’s the same guy, he doesn’t change; he’s a leader,” Bolles said. “… He’s one of the winningest quarterbacks [the] last 10 years, you guys know the stats, that’s just who he is. … Random rumors and things like that and the fire burns. It’s like a forest fire, you start in one corner and the wind blows and it just burns thousands and thousands of acres, and that’s sort of what happened.

“[But] he’s not focused on that, he just wants to win,” Bolles said.

On September 10 against the Raiders, Wilson will have his first opportunity to disprove his critics.
