Patriots QB Mac Jones Is Attempting To Regain The Team’s Respect After A Terrible Season

Last week, there was a definite difference in quarterback Mac Jones.

In his first press conference following the completion of a disastrous 2022 season, he seemed at comfortable. After a challenging second season in the NFL, a relaxed Jones showed a humbled, vulnerable side that was more real and less robotic and cliché-filled than what often transpired in those Q&As.

Speaking to reporters over the past week, the former first-round pick, who was closely watched last season in New England where there was a maligned offensive coaching change and system to boot, vowed how he’s “going to do everything I can to earn the respect of everybody in this building again.”

“Sometimes the most confident people come from a year where they might not have been their best. I feel like that’s where I’m at,” the 24-year-old Jones said, according to ESPN.

Really great people are formed through ups and downs. Some of the learning experiences I had last year will really help. There’s a lot of things I can do better as a person, as a player.”

He disclosed some of his offseason strategy during his 10-minute press conference near the Patriots’ practice fields, which was one of the more insightful moments.

“There’s mental, physical, emotional, and I’ve addressed all that. You try to fill up each bucket the right way,” he said.

Jones’ work ethic to improve on the field this offseason was never in question; it’s something coach Bill Belichick has consistently mentioned and did so again last week when he said, “Mac works hard every day. He puts in a lot of time in the weight room, the classroom, on the field. His work ethic is really good and hasn’t changed.”

Jones, who was selected with the 15th overall choice out of Alabama in the 2021 NFL Draft, excelled in his rookie year, tossing for 3,801 yards, 22 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions while being nominated for the Pro Bowl.
