Former NFL Coach Jon Gruden Helps Saints To Frame Their Offence

Jon Gruden hasn’t spoken to anyone in the NFL for almost 20 months since he left his position as the Raiders’ head coach. But this week, when Gruden made the decision to travel to New Orleans to support an old buddy, things finally started to shift.

In an effort to aid Derek Carr in making the transition from the scheme he used with the Raiders to the offense he will use with the Saints, Gruden has reportedly been spending time with the Saints this week, according to NOLA.com.

Carr is accustomed to a West Coast offensive scheme similar to that of Gruden and current Raiders head coach Josh McDaniels. Who better to bring to the table for some perspective than Gruden while McDaniels is still in Vegas?

According to reports, Gruden paid the team a visit this week, allowing the coaching staff to quiz him and get some tips from him.

Because Sean Payton initially implemented the Saints’ current scheme, Gruden’s offense is comparable to that in New Orleans. Since Pete Carmichael, who is currently in charge of the Saints’ offense, served as Sean Payton’s assistant for 16 seasons in New Orleans, not much has changed despite the fact that he is no longer employed there.

Due to their time spent together in Philadelphia, Payton and Gruden have similar offensive philosophies. Payton coached the quarterbacks while Gruden oversaw the Eagles’ offense during the 1997 campaign.

Carr was acquired by the Saints due of his experience with the system.

“He’s a great fit for us,” Saints offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael said about his new quarterback.

“We’ll cater to things that he likes as long as it fits with our personnel. The majority of what we’ve done (in New Orleans) he’s had some of that over his career. There’s a lot of similarities.”
