Reports Reveal QB Jimmy Garoppolo Underwent Foot Surgery After Being Signed By Raiders
After Garoppolo’s season-ending fractured foot with the 49ers in December, the Raiders signed him to a three-year contract at the beginning of free agency. Garoppolo’s foot was not operated on at the time because 49ers medical staff felt the quarterback would be OK following a two-month recuperation period.

The Athletic said that after signing with Las Vegas, Garoppolo got surgery in March to repair a foot issue he sustained during the 2022 season. In a press conference on Thursday, Raiders coach Josh McDaniels stated that the team was previously aware of the injury and subsequent surgery before he was signed.

Despite missing the team’s OTA sessions, McDaniels added that he anticipates Garoppolo to return in time for the start of the 2023 NFL season:
“We don’t play a game for 100 days,” McDaniels said (via The Athletic). “Everything that’s happened since we signed Jimmy, we knew ahead of time. … Certainly had an awareness of all of it. Our preference is not to push it and rush anybody back at this point in time.”

What Caused The Injury?
The Athletic claims that on December 6, 2022, while playing against the Dolphins, Garoppolo hurt his left foot. Although San Francisco did leave open the potential of a comeback if the 49ers won the Super Bowl, that injury ultimately sidelined Garoppolo for the rest of the season.
It became moot because the Vikings ultimately fell to the Eagles in the NFC championship game on Sunday, Jan. 29.
So much for that false report that Jimmy Garoppolo was healthy enough to play in the NFC title game… clearly not possible, since he had to have foot surgery in March

The 49ers suspected that Garoppolo’s ailment at the time was a Lisfranc fracture, according to The Athletic. He was given a two-month rehabilitation timetable after team doctors assessed that it was a separate fracture that didn’t need surgical treatment.
When Will The QB Return?
Garoppolo could be able to participate in time for the team’s Sept. 10 home opener against the Steelers, according to McDaniels. Nevertheless, Garoppolo’s history of injuries does raise some doubts about his durability in 2023.

Garoppolo has only really played through two complete seasons when healthy due to a long history of ailments. He began each of the 49ers’ 16 games in 2019, and the team won the Super Bowl. He subsequently made 15 starts for San Francisco in 2021, with Trey Lance starting two games in place of an injured Jimmy Garoppolo. However, Garoppolo managed to guide the team to the NFC Championship Game.
For the offseason program, the Raiders have Brian Hoyer, Chase Garbers, and youngster Aidan O’Connell at quarterback.
