Dodgers Apologize To The LGBTQ+ Community And Invite The Drag Nun Group Back To Pride Night

The Los Angeles Dodgers had previously declined to include a drag group in the team’s forthcoming Pride Night at Dodger Stadium, but have now apologized and given a second invitation.

The Los Angeles Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence drag organization, which spearheads charitable and activist initiatives in the community, was originally going to receive a Community Hero Award from the Dodgers during their Pride celebration on June 16. However, the team this week pulled the Sisters from their list of awardees in response to a surge of conservative outrage at the drag group’s usage of Catholic iconography and other religious attire.

Following a letter from a Florida Republican senator accusing the sisters, an organization that gained notoriety during the Aids crisis, of being anti-Christian extremists, the baseball club revoked the group’s invitation last week. The organization, which does street drag shows as well as humanitarian and protest activities, was scheduled to receive an award during a ceremony prior to a game versus the San Francisco Giants on June 16.

Marco Rubio, a Republican senator from Florida, and other conservative Roman Catholics and politicians have accused the group of making fun of nuns and Christianity. Rubio’s press team sent out an email blast last week with the subject line “Rubio Knocks Out Wokeism from the LA Dodgers” to celebrate the nuns’ expulsion by the Dodgers.

Donohue, who was named by GLAAD’s Accountability Project as someone who uses his influence “to spread misinformation and false rhetoric against LGBTQ people, youth, and allies,” said that his most recent letter to MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred seeking the Sisters’ removal was crucial.

The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, who are based in San Francisco, vigorously disputed Donohue’s accusations of “Catholic bashing” and boasted about their decades of service going back to 1979, when the group was founded as a non-profit in response to the AIDS crisis, raising money for care and safe-sex awareness. However, a greater backlash ensued.

The Dodgers again changed their minds on Monday, saying in a statement that they will include the Sisters after all.

The Los Angeles Dodgers would like to extend their sincere apologies to the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, members of the LGBTQ+ community, and their friends and families, the MLB team said. “After much thoughtful feedback from our diverse communities, honest conversations within the Los Angeles Dodgers organization, and generous discussions with the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence,” the team said.

The drag collective has declared their intention to accept the Community Hero Award.

In a statement, The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence claimed that it was among the first organizations to generate funds to assist in the treatment of those who had the disease when it was founded in San Francisco during the height of the Aids crisis. Today, the group generates hundreds of thousands of dollars annually for underfunded grassroots organizations and has loosely structured chapters all across the world.

The organization disclaimed being against Catholics. The organization described itself as using “humor and irreverent wit to expose the forces of bigotry, complacency, and guilt that chain the human spirit” on their website.
