Lions NFL 2023 Draft Pick ‘Jahmyr Gibbs’ Came As A Surprise!

The first round of the 2023 NFL Draft was incredibly surprising, as many people had predicted. Jahmyr Gibbs! Two running backs were picked in the first 12 picks, Kentucky quarterback Will Levis dropped out of the first round, and the Houston Texans traded up to make back-to-back selections at No. 2 and No. 3 overall!

Lions NFL 2023 Draft Pick ‘Jahmyr Gibbs’ Came As A Surprise!

The Arizona Cardinals selected former Ohio State offensive lineman Paris Johnson Jr. after trading back with the Lions, who were initially set to choose sixth in the first round.

Jahmyr Gibbs, a former Alabama running back, was taken by the Detroit Lions at No. 12 overall when they exchanged places with the Arizona Cardinals. Gibbs was reportedly a guy garnering some first-round hype earlier this week, so it was startling to see him picked at No. 12 overall. It was so strong that even Gibbs felt it!

While the Georgia Tech transfer may not be a “complete” back who will be dominant in pass protection for example, his skill as a pass catcher and his propensity for making defenders miss are difficult to ignore. Last season, Gibbs ranked third in the SEC in scrimmage yards with 1,370. Gibbs is a weapon, not a running back, similar to Robinson.

“I feel great,” Gibbs said. “I didn’t know I would get picked as high as I did because running backs don’t get picked as high in this new age and new era of the NFL Draft, but it was pretty shocking to me.

“But I’m grateful for the city of Detroit.”

After the selection was made, cameras pan to the Lions’ draft room, where head coach Dan Campbell is seen hugging general manager Brad Holmes, who excitedly slaps a table.

“We’ve kind of put Jahmyr in his own separate box and just got really excited about the player,” Holmes said, according to ESPN, which reported the Alabama product was a “favorite” of the GM.

For his part, Gibbs did not anticipate receiving a call so late at night.

Fans of the Detroit Lions will adore Jahmyr Gibbs. When in space, he is a defender’s worst nightmare. Because he is DYNAMITE with the ball in his hands, the Lions will use him as both a running back and a receiver all over the field.

Gibbs will offer a dependable set of hands to Detroit along with sub-4.4 40-yard sprint speed. For the Crimson Tide last season, he racked up 926 rushing yards and 444 receiving yards, along with 10 total touchdowns.
