Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones Acknowledges Choosing Ezekiel Elliott 4th Overall In The 2016 NFL Draft Was Not The Correct Decision

In anticipation of the 2023 NFL Draft, which starts on Thursday and lasts through Saturday, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones was in a good mood on Monday during the team’s annual pre-draft news conference. Jones made fun of vice president Stephen Jones, claiming that the poor selections were all his fault and that the strong selections were all his doing.

When asked if Will McClay will ever be elevated to general manager, Jones reminded everyone that the Cowboys had a general manager and thanked McClay for managing the scouting department.

Many were shocked when the club chose running back Ezekiel Elliott with the fourth overall choice in the 2016 NFL Draft. The owner made a remark about picking Elliott that high in the 2016 NFL Draft when discussing the value of the running back position.

The Cowboys owner now acknowledges that he erred in choosing running back Ezekiel Elliott with the fourth overall choice in the 2016 NFL Draft, as seen by the deterioration of the running back position across the league.

Elliott had one of the greatest rookie seasons in NFL history for a running back. With 1,631 running yards and an average of 108.7 yards per game in 2016, the former Ohio State standout was the NFL’s top rusher. His 15 touchdowns were the third-most that season and the 1,994 yards from scrimmage were good for the second-most.

With a non-guaranteed base salary of $10.9 million, Elliott, 27, was expected to contribute $16.7 million toward the salary limit. In 2022, he rushed for 876 yards, which was a career low.

After seven seasons with the Cowboys, Jerry Jones made the decision to break ways with Elliott this summer.
