Riley Gaines Shades Megan Rapinoe For Protesting Against A Bill Protecting Women Rights

Megan Rapinoe and others have resisted the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act, while Riley Gaines, a former NCAA top swimmer at Kentucky, has been accused of “virtue signalling.”

Gaines responded to a March tweet from Rapinoe. Athlete Ally sent a letter to House members criticising the bill on the same day that Rapinoe, Sue Bird, and 38 other people signed it. Gaines’ response to the Rapinoe tweet was, “Today, lawmakers in DC are proposing a trans & intersex sports ban while claiming to “defend women’s sports.” Call your Congressional rep today to say women’s sports need protection from unequal pay, sexual abuse & lack of resources, NOT from trans kids.”

“It’s worth noting that 1) you are done playing sports competitively and 2) because you aren’t sexually attracted to men, you will never have a daughter to defend. To me, this simply looks like virtue signalling because you have nothing to personally lose,” Gaines wrote.

Rapinoe’s sexual orientation, however, has no bearing on the possibility that she may give birth to a daughter in the future. Sue Bird, a basketball legend, and Rapinoe are engaged.

“I can respect opinions that differ from my own and everyone is entitled to think/speak independently, but I can’t help but think Megan Rapinoe would genuinely shiv any male who tried to take her spot on the US Women’s National Team,” Gaines added.

Since then, Gaines has removed the tweets.

Sports Illustrated reports that the letter was sent on Monday by the athlete advocacy group Athlete Ally. The athletes contend that rather than protecting women in sports, the measure will prevent girls and women from benefiting from “mental and physical health benefits.” Gaines was not quietly listening to this!

Last week, the Biden administration’s suggestion to prohibit explicit prohibitions on transgender athletes garnered criticism. The proposed regulation states that broad prohibitions would be against Title IX. For instance, it would be challenging for schools to forbid a transgender girl from participating on a females baseball team.

The proposed regulation would give schools the freedom to create rules that exclude trans athletes from participating on more competitive teams if such rules are intended to guarantee fairness or avoid sports-related accidents.

The Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act was proposed by Republican Rep. Greg Steube of Florida in February. The bill seeks an amendment to Title IX “to provide that for purposes of determining compliance with Title IX of such Act in athletics, sex shall be recognised based solely on a person’s reproductive biology and genetics at birth.”
