Yankees’ Ben Rortvedt Injury Update: To Stay Ruled Out For The Beginning Of The Season

When the New York Yankees acquired Ben Rortvedt from the Minnesota Twins, they had great expectations for him. The highly regarded 25-year-old was supposed to become one of the club’s best catchers, but injuries have prevented that from happening.

Due to surgery on his left knee, Rortvedt missed a significant portion of 2022. He did come back for the season’s final stretch, but he did not play in the majors. Rortvedt is now expected to miss another significant amount of time due to injury just as things appeared to be going better for him.

The Yankees catcher underwent surgery Wednesday to address an aneurysm of the posterior artery near his left shoulder, per MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch. The problem was causing circulation issues, which led to Rortvedt’s previously known finger issue, according to The Athletic’s Brendan Kuty.

“To be hit by this has just been kind of blindsiding,” said Rortvedt

The youthful backstop will be sidelined for at least a month, probably longer. The team identified a circulation problem in his left index finger during spring training. Rortvedt had to have surgery as a result of a posterior artery aneurysm close to his left shoulder, according to a subsequent report.

Rortvedt, 25, has yet to make his Yankees debut, though he did play in 39 games for the Twins in 2021. He spent his first season in the Yankees organization in the minors, primarily at Triple-A. Rortvedt slashed .221/.307/.396 with six home runs and 20 RBI over 42 games for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

For a guy who hasn’t been in the majors since facing the Toronto Blue Jays on September 19, 2021, the news comes at the worst possible time.
