Being the first two Black quarterbacks to start a Super Bowl on Sunday night means a lot to Patrick Mahomes and Jalen Hurts.

Two of the NFL’s most charismatic players square off in Arizona. Mahomes of Kansas City, who recently earned his second MVP award and is vying for a second Super Bowl victory, squares up against Hurts of Philadelphia, whose team has gone 16-1 when he has started this year.
Three of the seven Black quarterbacks who have started Super Bowls—Doug Williams, Russell Wilson, and Patrick Mahomes—have tasted success on the highest stage in the NFL.

To be lucky enough to be in this position — and play against another great guy like Jalen — it will be a special moment. I’m glad we’re here today, but how can we keep moving forward? How can we motivate kids who are younger, who want to follow their dreams to be a quarterback?’ – Mahomes
Hurts, 24, added: ‘I think it’s history. I think it’s something that’s worthy of being noted and it is history. It’s come a long way. I think it’s only been seven African-American quarterbacks to play in the Super Bowl, so to be the first for something is pretty cool. I know it will be a good one.’

Following the Chiefs’ 38-35 victory over Hurts’ Eagles, the Philadelphia Inquirer tweeted a picture of Hurts and Mahomes slapping hands and leaning in for a hug. Hurts was then informed by Mahomes that he played a “heck of a game,” by the league’s MVP, who also won the Super Bowl.
Hurts may have departed the State Farm Stadium field before shaking Mahomes’ hand, though, according to a number of sources. After the Chiefs won the Super Bowl, Hurts “jogged off the field and into the tunnel just now by himself,” according to Fox Sports.

There also weren’t any photos captured of the pair shaking hands on the field postgame, according to CBS Sports. That, in addition to the handshake between the two coaches, is traditionally a moment shown on NFL broadcasts.
To win their second championship in the previous four years, the Chiefs defeated the Eagles. At halftime, Philadelphia had a 10-point advantage, but Kansas City scored on each of its drives to close the gap. The team also weathered a scare with an injury when Patrick Mahomes worsened a high-ankle sprain sustained in the AFC Divisional Round. With eight seconds left in the fourth quarter, Harrison Butker made the game-winning field goal to give the Chiefs a short lead that they would ultimately hold onto.
