What Made Dan Quinn Return As Cowboys’ DC For 2023 Season When He Had Potential HC Offers?

Dan Quinn has chosen to stay as the Dallas Cowboys’ defensive coordinator for a second consecutive year, turning down potential head-coaching jobs in the process.

In recent weeks, Quinn had interviews with the Denver Broncos, Arizona Cardinals, and Indianapolis Colts. Quinn was one of the top candidates for the head coaching position with the Cardinals, according to Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network. He also conducted interviews for the vacant head coaching positions with the Colts and Broncos.

“Unfinished business here in Dallas. My complete focus is helping the team play championship ball in 2023,” Quinn told ESPN’s Ed Werder.

But in Dallas, Quinn feels at home. And the Cowboys are quite appreciative, especially given the rumours circulating about the situation of offensive coordinator Kellen Moore, another highly-touted talent who is anticipated to be competing for head coaching positions throughout the league.

“We’re all extremely excited to have Dan back,” Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy said Thursday, per The Athletic. “This is big for us. It gives us continuity. Frankly, on a personal note, I can’t tell you how thankful I am.”

Quinn will earn a big sum of money by deciding to remain with America’s Team. The Cowboys and Quinn reached an agreement on a multi-year extension for him to stay on despite interest from other teams, owner Jerry Jones revealed to the Dallas Morning News last year. Quinn signed a contract last year for $4.5 million, according to Spotrac.

That amounts to head coach pay. Quinn was able to select his next location on his own because he was financially secure and had a wide range of possibilities. In addition, many think Quinn will take over as head coach if Jerry Jones decides to replace McCarthy. He seemed to find it simpler to stay because of that and his fondness for Dallas’ roster.

Quinn and Micah Parsons have contributed to making the Cowboys’ defence one of the strongest in the league. He’ll probably still have suitors if he can do it again, just as he did in the offseason before. Quinn’s decision to remain in Dallas may not have been as shocking as it first appeared to be given the flashy deal in his possession and the imminent likelihood of a Super Bowl.

It’s a bunch of reasons, I think it’s the staff, the players,” McCarthy said of Quinn’s reasoning. “He’s been a head coach, he understands at this point in his life how hard it is to win a Super Bowl. All those things play into that. I think clearly Dan is in a position to be selective and I’m extremely excited about the decision.”
