According to reports, 45 seats will apparently be removed from the stadium as part of the improvements in order to improve access to the tunnel for players and personnel on football Saturdays. The choice was made following an assessment of the stadium’s design in the wake of last fall’s fight between Michigan players and opponents from Michigan State.
The judgement was also influenced by another incident that occurred during the same game, in which a Wolverines fan touched Spartans coach Mel Tucker’s head as he was walking through the tunnel. According to the article, that fan is no longer permitted to attend stadium matches.

The Michigan Wolverines-Michigan State Spartans brawl was the most notable and contentious of the numerous confrontations brought on by the short tunnel entry.
Remember, following the meeting between the two teams in October 2022, two Michigan football players—Gemon Green and Ja’Den McBurrows—were attacked by Spartans players who were seen on camera. A police inquiry and multiple suspensions were the result.

Angelo Grose, Brandon Wright, Itayvion Brown, Jacoby Windmon, Justin White, and Zion Young, six players for the Spartans, were each charged with a misdemeanour. Khary Crump, who was shown on camera striking Green with his helmet, was charged with one count of criminal assault but later pleaded guilty to a misdemeanour count of assault and battery.
Widening the tunnel access is only one method to reduce potential conflicts and problems, of course. Ultimately, it might be advantageous for Michigan football to increase security to ensure that a repeat of the October incident won’t occur.
