“It’s Not About Race, It’s About….”- After Being Branded Racist for Firing Lovie Smith Houston Texans GM Makes a Strong Statement

This season the Houston Texans were arguably one of the worst if not the worst team in the league. The Texans finished bottom of the table in the AFC South winning just three games and losing a mind-boggling 13 games this season. Naturally, with such a poor performance this season, there were going to be a few people who paid the price. After just one season with the Texans, head coach, Lovie Smith was fired for extremely poor performances.

This has invoked strong reactions from sites such as ESPN who have accused the Texans of being racist. Robert Griffin III tweeted his criticisms of the Texans, suggesting that race played a part in Lovie’s departure. Then, Stephen A. Smith went on ESPN’s First Take and said black coaches should decline the Houston Texans job if offered.

There has also been a huge set of people who have hit out at the likes of Stephen A. Smith for even suggesting that race played a part in the Texan’s decision, especially when you finish a season 3-13.

Houston Texans GM makes a statement

Naturally, with such wild accusations going on around the reason for the firing of Lovie Smith, General Manager Nick Caserio addressed the media where he also shared his thoughts on why Smith was fired. He said, “I think each individual is going to have to make that choice. In the end, it’s not about race, it’s about finding quality coaches … All I can do is be honest and forthright, which I’ve done from the day that I took this job. And I’m going to continue to do that and try to find the coach that makes the most sense for this organization.”

He continued, “When we get into these interviews, the only way to handle things is to be honest and open and respect their position … There’s going to have to be an open dialogue, you have to open communication. Quite frankly, there’s going to be some tough conversations that we may need to have.” The Texans hiring process will be under intense scrutiny after this move and it will be interesting to see who they appoint next as the head coach.
