Reports: Dolphins Might Fire Coach Mike McDaniel If They Lose This Weekend

The Miami Dolphins’ season has been difficult under coach Mike McDaniel’s leadership.

The Dolphins have fallen to their knees after at one point cruising to an 8-3 record and appearing to be headed for the postseason. To have a chance at a wild-card spot, the squad, which is currently on a five-game losing streak, must defeat the New York Jets in Week 18.

Despite the team’s recent mishaps, Armando Salguero of Outkick’s suggestion that McDaniel’s career would be in jeopardy based on the outcome of Week 18 came as a small surprise.

Reports: Dolphins Might Fire Coach Mike McDaniel If They Lose This Weekend

Salguero’s report read: “If they [Miami] win their season finale and sneak into the playoffs, owner Stephen Ross might look the other way on those five consecutive December-January losses because it will feel more like a skid than a collapse. But…If the Dolphins go from 8-3 to 8-9 and not in the playoffs? Everybody’s job is at risk.”

Ross may not be unreasonable in this situation, despite his harsh words. Any coach would find it challenging to recover from a six-game losing streak when a postseason position is still in sight.

One has to wonder if the treatment of quarterback Tua Tagovailoa contributed to the ownership’s lack of patience with McDaniel, even though it wasn’t mentioned in Salguero’s story.

For how it handled the franchise quarterback’s concussions, the team has received a lot of criticism. It wouldn’t be the first time a coach was fired for comparable reasons, which is good news for football fans.

Still just 39 years old, McDaniel was hired in Miami with some fanfare. As the offensive and run game coordinator for the San Francisco 49ers, he was credited with several of the team’s recent victories. McDaniel will almost probably have a future as a head coach, whether it’s in Miami or somewhere else.
