NBA to Mexico? – “Its Definitely Possible” Says Commissioner Adam Silver Over Potential Plans of Expansion

Mexico City has the ability to host a prospective franchise in the future, according to NBA Commissioner Adam Silver, even if the plans for an expansion have not yet been revealed. On Saturday, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver informed reporters that the league may take Mexico City under consideration for expansion. Regarding the specifics of the alleged NBA expansion to numerous cities, including Las Vegas, Seattle, and Vancouver, Silver has stayed mum.

Silver stated that although the NBA is not yet prepared to expand, Mexico City is among the top cities the NBA is looking at for a potential new franchise to be added to the league due to the success of the Capitanes, the capital city’s G League team, this season and the growth of the country’s NBA fanbase to approximately 30 million people.

What did Adam Silver say about expansion to Mexico?

“It’s definitely possible,” Silver said. “I don’t have a specific timeline right now in terms of expansion, but there’s no doubt we will be looking seriously at Mexico City over time.”

According to Adam Silver, who disputed some of the most often voiced concerns by those who question the viability of a Mexican NBA franchise, the Capitanes have sparked tremendous local interest. When NBA Deputy Commissioner Mark Tatum told Andscape’s Marc J. Spears that there might be a chance given Mexico City’s world-class facility of Arena CDMX, the existence of G League team Mexico Capitanes, and the close proximity of Arizona, Texas, and Florida teams, rumors of a potential expansion were suddenly sparked.

On Saturday in Mexico City, there was a matchup between the Miami Heat and the San Antonio Spurs. Mexico has hosted 30 games since 1992, more than any other nation save the US and Canada combined.
