At Santa Fe High School in Edmond, Oklahoma, Richardson averaged 16.5 points, 6.2 rebounds, and 3.6 assists as a point guard in his final year. He was selected for The Oklahoman’s Super 5 first team and the “Large West” All-State Team by the Oklahoma Coaches Association that year.

Richardson was chosen by the Miami Heat as the 40th overall choice in the 2015 NBA Draft on June 25, 2015. Before playing with the Spurs, he played for the 76ers, Mavericks, and Celtics.
