Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones Proposes A Significant Change To The NFL Schedule

Jerry Jones, owner of the Dallas Cowboys, will likely respond with a significant scheduling adjustment if you ask him what change he wants to see in the NFL.

Jones made a recent visit on the 105.3 The Fan and implied as much, saying he has always supported an 18-game season. The Cowboys’ head coach highlighted that it is the ideal number for him because a 20-game schedule would appear excessive.

Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones Proposes A Significant Change To The NFL Schedule

Jerry Jones did mention that the NFL may reduce the preseason to just two games in order to adhere to that schedule.

“One more I see, and I’m a big proponent of it. I think that’s the right level. That allows us to, as we go into the early games of the season, that allows us to have those games. You will get better if you play those games because you will play less preseason games,” Jones shared, via Pro Football Talk.

“You know at one time they played six preseason games in the NFL for you history buffs. But still I like to play two or three preseason games and 18 regular season games and have been a proponent of that.”

It hasn’t been too long since the NFL expanded the season to 17 games, so what Jerry Jones is proposing isn’t too far-fetched. And sure enough, other NFL owners will love the idea.

In 1978, the NFL increased its regular season schedule from 14 to 16 games, and that structure persisted through the 2020 campaign.

An additional regular-season game would result in enormous financial gains for Jones and the other NFL owners. But it’s understandable that a lot of athletes will be concerned about their health and safety if a physically demanding and dangerous sport sees its schedule expanded.

One of the two significant modifications the NFL has made moving back to 2020 is the addition of the 17th game. The following year, the league increased the number of playoff teams from 12 to 14, with only the conference’s top seed receiving a first-round bye.

Even if the players are enthusiastic about the concept of an 18-game regular season schedule, it would probably take some time before anything changed. It doesn’t hurt, however, to at least throw the concept out there if you’re Jones.
