According to SNY’s Andy Martino, two-time Cy Young Award winner Jacob deGrom never gave the Mets a chance to make a last, best offer when he signed a five-year contract with the Texas Rangers on December 2.
During a press conference on Monday at the 2022 Winter Meetings in San Diego, GM Billy Eppler was asked if there was any sadness that deGrom didn’t contact the Mets again before signing a contract with the Rangers.

“I’m not going to get into any details on Jacob’s situation,” Billy Eppler said. “We talked a number of times, we talked every single day leading into the week. But beyond that, not going to disclose any of the details of those conversations.”
Billy Eppler added: “He’s a great pitcher, he gave Mets fans a lot of really good memories. Like I said, we wish him the best. Happy that he was able to make a decision that he felt was best for him and his family. We’ll miss him.”
