Timberwolves Chaos: Played With Only 4 Players As D’Angelo Russell Forgets To Check Into Game

Have you ever wondered what would occur if a real NBA player zoned out when his team was at the foul line? D’Angelo Russell demonstrated this for us on Wednesday when his Minnesota Timberwolves faced the Phoenix Suns.

With 7:53 left in the second quarter, teammate Jaylen Nowell converted a driving layup. On the shot, he was fouled, so he went to the line to make his and-one free throw. Russell simply forgot to check in as he was waiting at the scorer’s table. After Nowell made the free throw, the Timberwolves went back to playing defence… with four players on the floor.

In the second quarter of Wednesday’s game against the Phoenix Suns, Russell was called upon to enter the action as a substitute. Taurean Prince replaced Wolves player Jaylen Nowell on the court in favour of Russell after Nowell was fouled during a successful layup.

Russell didn’t enter the contest before Nowell’s lone free throw attempt, which was an issue. He didn’t even enter the game until 15 seconds after Nowell’s free shot was made.

With only four Wolves players on defence as the Suns brought the ball upcourt, Russell waited to enter the game at the scorer’s table. The Suns were able to get Damion Lee an easy-open corner three because there wasn’t a fifth defender.

Russell was still on the bench when Torrey Craig of the Suns snatched the rebound after Lee missed the shot. Craig made one pass before immediately regaining possession of the ball and launching a 3-pointer. Russell finally recognised that his team was losing, sprinted to the floor, and witnessed the ball swish past the goal as Craig loaded up to the fire.

After trading for Rudy Gobert, the Timberwolves went into this season anticipating to be a contender. They have a terrible 5-7 record so far. In his final year of employment, Russell is attempting to convince the Timberwolves that he deserves to be their starting point guard in the future. Such errors won’t assist him in obtaining a long-term contract. It might not have changed the outcome of the game, but it was a perfect example of Minnesota’s season-long troubles.
