Joe Schoen Intends To Sign Saquon Barkley On A Long-Term Contract With The Giants

Joe Schoen, the general manager of the New York Giants, has been making the rounds during the bye week and has said a lot of fascinating things. Schoen said the team would talk about possible contract extensions for many players this week, including quarterback Daniel Jones and running back Saquon Barkley, during a press conference on Tuesday.

The Giants paid the 25-year-old running back $7.217 million for his fifth-year option deal, and he is currently playing this season. He was selected second overall in the 2018 NFL Draft.

With 779 running yards, a 4.8 yard average, five touchdowns, and 28 receptions for 189 yards, Saquon Barkley has looked as good as ever this year after missing the majority of the 2020 season with a knee injury and failing to recapture his form the previous year.

For the entire season, such rushing stats translate to 1,655 yards and 11 touchdowns.

Joe Schoen Intends To Sign Saquon Barkley On A Long-Term Contract With The Giants

When Joe Schoen joined WFAN’s Tiki and Tierney on Wednesday afternoon, things advanced.

“Saquon is a culture guy that fits into everything we’ve asked,” Joe Schoen said. “He’s a captain, and he’s a very good player at his position who’s having a very good season. So, he’s a guy. Obviously, we’re going to do our due diligence on them, and we’d like to keep him around here, so we can get into contract extension talks.”

“You have a value for a player, where we see him and why and then knowing that you do have the franchise tag as a tool in your toolbox.”

It won’t be inexpensive to extend Barkley’s deal. Christian McCaffrey, the highest-paid running back in the NFL, makes slightly over $16 million a year. Alvin Kamara and Ezekiel Elliott each get $15 million a year.

If the Giants and Saquon Barkley are unable to come to a long-term agreement, they may choose to place the $12.6 million franchise tag on Barkley in 2023.

Joe Schoen has made it plain to Saquon Barkley that he wants to negotiate an extension and would prefer it not to get to that.
