“Couldn’t Spend the Money”: Celtics Star Jayson Tatum Reveals the Extent of His Mother’s Hold On his Finances

Despite being a very well-paid athlete in the US, Boston Celtics star Jayson Tatum has disclosed the exact degree of the influence his mother has on his finances. Jayson agreed to a five-year contract deal with the Celtics in November 2020, which may be valued at up to $195.6 million. The overall compensation will rely on Tatum reaching specific goals like winning the MVP award and being selected for the All-NBA team. The minimum agreement worth is $163 million in the event that he fails not to reach the goals. He will earn $33 million in compensation in the first year. His basic pay will be $44.5 million in year five.

One would ask what Jayson Tatum does with his NBA money given the size of his deal with the Boston Celtics. His mother, Brandy Cole, however, has direct knowledge.

Tatum claimed Cole, who is in charge of handling his funds, is to blame for his budgeting practices during an interview with journalist Graham Bessinger.

“We had a deal before I got drafted that I couldn’t spend the money I make from the Celtics, that I have to live off my endorsements,” Tatum told Bessinger.

“Her and my accountant agreed. They didn’t know that I’d make as much as I did off the court. So in my mind, I gotta spend that money,” Tatum added.

Tatum’s mother struck a pact with him to ensure that he would live off endorsement money rather than his earnings as a Celtics player in order to act in his best interests. He has several endorsement agreements thanks to his professional affiliations with brands like Jordan, Subway, and Gatorade, among others.
